Our home office has been a WRECK for the past several months – it’s the space we used to store everything going into our master bathroom addition from our new vanity (that sat there for months before it was installed) to the tile, bath hardware, accessories, and more. This was the scene on one of its more organized days during the reno:
With all four of us at home full-time and three of us needing a quiet work space, it was definitely time to reclaim it! Last week I cleaned the heck out of it and also added a few new updates. I wanted to lighten up the space and while I was initially thinking about changing the wall color, I decided I could stick with my much-loved dark walls and get that same lighter feel by swapping out the rug. I found the perfect rug for my space (plus a few other little pretties)! Ready to see? (post includes affiliate links; full disclosure statement available {here})
After looking through tons of rug options, I ended up choosing {this gorgeous flatweave indoor/outdoor rug} that has the prettiest textured geometric pattern:
I wish I had made this simple rug swap years ago – it made such a huge difference to the look and feel of our office!
While I love jute rugs, the chunky nature of our old jute rug made it a little challenging to move our desk chair up and back from the desk – the flatweave construction of my new one makes is so much easier. I went with the 8 x 10 size which fills our room nicely with the back legs of our chair staying on the rug even when it’s fully pushed away from the desk.
(our office chair is no longer available but {this wingback chair} is similar)
Indoor-outdoor rugs like this one have come such a LONG way in the past few years. They use to all be thin and plasticky but now there are so many options that are stylish and soft on your feet. And how cute are the tassels on the end of mine?! – love them:
These are a few of my other favorite rugs that I saved as possible options for future makeover projects:

1. Warlick Area Rug 2. Enloe Striped Cotton Rug 3. Wilsonville Tufted Wool Area Rug 4. Pittsfield Tufted Area Rug 5. Gunter Indoor/Outdoor Rug 6. Beaverton Tufted Wool Rug 7. Enloe Cotton Area Rug 8. Alba Gray Rug 9. Warlick Cream Area Rug
One of those future projects is adding an inexpensive table and chairs to our back porch so we can have some meals outside – my plan is to order {this blue and white outdoor rug} (the one in the middle of the graphic above) to that space. I love the design and think it would work beautifully with {this outdoor rug} that we have our lounge chairs on that would be next to it:
Ready to see the other smaller additions to our home office? You might have already noticed that I added {this garden stool} because I wanted a spot away from my laptop where I could rest a drink without risk of frying it with a spill:
My exact stool just went out of stock but {this garden stool is super similar} and I love {this stool} too. A martini table would also work well for holding a drink near your desk chair, especially if you have limited floor space.
I also added some new plants to freshen up the space and went with something I’ve had decent luck with keeping alive in the past – succulents. I planted a group of them in {this gorgeous wood planter} (I lined it with plastic first) and am loving the look:
Cross your fingers for me that I can keep these beauties alive! My wood planter also comes in a larger size {here} that would make a beautiful table centerpiece.
I added some new greenery to our shelves on the other side of our office too:
(brass ceiling light fixture is available {here})
How cute is {this ceramic llama planter}?! Love him!
I also added {this beautiful set of resin boxes} to our bookcase – I originally bought them for our bathroom and threw them up here temporarily but now I’m not sure where their final home will be because I love how they look against the black walls:
The black and white canister to the right is one of a set of two that is currently out of stock but you can check for restocks {here}.
What’s the next big project that you’re working on? I’m hoping to share the “after” of my most recent big one next weekend – our master bathroom addition! Be sure to sign up for my emails {here} so you don’t miss that post or the reveal of our closet makeover with IKEA products that will come shortly after that! I’m so excited to share it!
Have a great start to your week,

Love the rug, but it’s time to get real. This room is completely not functional as an “office”. Where is the computer? It’s simply not realistic for designers to showcase any office without including a computer workspace . It’s like a kitchen without an oven or sink. Where will the chords run? We all know monitors have ugly backsides. And although this chair is pleasing to the eye, how long can you sit in it to work? Sorry for the rant, but I’m looking for advice on how to improve my home, not help staging it.

Hi Ellen, I’m happy to get real. We use this home office daily and it’s completely functional for my family’s needs. None of us have desktop computers – we are a laptop only family and there is an outlet on the back wall that we plug our laptops into. I actually hate typical desk chairs – I love this one because it’s roomy enough that I can curl my legs up into it when I work on my laptop (definitely not an orthopedic-approved position but it’s how I roll 🙂 ). My husband prefers a desk chair – we have a second desk area in our family room with a desk and desk chair which is where he works most often so we both have the type of set-up that we’re most comfortable with. I understand that what works best for us might not work best for other families – we each have to tailor our own homes to the way we live.

I absolutely LOVE your home office. I envision having my morning coffee and working on my laptop in that beautiful chair. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! The color of the walls is so rich too. Great Job!!

How very rude. I love this home office! Not everyone wants an ugly, industrial looking space. I’ve been following Kris for years and she has a true talent for making spaces look lovely while being functional, as well. If you can’t be nice please go hide back in your cubical with your 1980’s mesh desk chair, plastic chair mat and jumbo desktop and find another blogger to follow who’s more your style. This is her blog, her home, and she can do whatever she wants! I’m so tired of people thinking they can be so rude online just because they’re hiding behind a screen.
