I’m excited to be sharing my love for suzanis with you guys today and giving you some amazing inspiration, ideas, and sources for decorating with them in your home. Are you all familiar with suzanis? True suzanis are intricately hand-embroidered textiles originating from Central Asia – the sewer’s embroidery skills and personality come shining through in each unique piece. They’re sewn using bright, vibrant colors in floral, vine, and medallion patterns that make a bold, dramatic impact when used to decorate a room. There are lots of fun ways to suzanis in your home that you might have never thought of (post includes some affiliate links).
One of the simplest ways is to drape them over sofas and chairs like in {this gorgeous space} from Elle Decor. To get a similar look in your own home, {Anthropologie’s linen chairs that are embroidered with suzani-inspired medallions} would be a fun addition:
Another way to use suzanis is as colorful bed throws or hung behind your headboard or in lieu of one. I LOVE this look! Like this bedroom from the blog Color Outside the Lines – isn’t it fabulous (the rest of his apartment is too – definitely one to check out!):
When a bold splash of color is needed in a room, a wonderful option is to use colorful suzani pillows like on {this family room sectional}. You can also tone things down a bit by sticking with just a few colors like the dark blue and green in this gorgeous living room showing {Pottery Barn’s Wilhelmina embroidered suzani pillow cover}:
Love neutrals? You can also find suzani pillows with the same exciting patterns but in more neutral tones like {these metallic suzani pillow covers} from Pottery Barn:
It’s also quite popular to use suzanis as rugs in the interior design world like in {this beautiful kitchen} from Garrison Hullinger Interior design or to use them as large framed panels like in {Megan Mullallay’s Hollywood Home} and {this vibrant living room} – they make beautiful art! I also love the look of vintage suzanis draped over tables as a tablecloth like {this neutral-toned table throw}:
or a more colorful one as seen {here} and {here} – absolutely gorgeous! If you like the look of framed suzanis or suzanis used as table coverings, buy fabric with a suzani inspired print and frame a few large pieces of it or sew the edges in a simple rectangle for a tablecloth. There are lots of options for suzani prints out there such as {these suzani fabrics} from Decorator’s Best. Want a genuine suzani instead? A great source for them is {this highly rated Etsy shop}.
Great article on Suzanis! A great affordable resource for vintage suzanis is http://www.BlackFigDesigns.com .
Ooh, I feel obliged to point out you don’t have to be a ‘lucky gal with $1200 to drop’ to get a lovely vintage Suzani.
You can buy just as beautiful (and more so!!) pieces on Ebay for a fraction of the price. Avoid the US and European sellers – they are all about fat profits – and check your seller hails from Uzbekistan. You can pick up a bedspread for around $120 and a small throw for around $50.
Support the Uzbek people, get yourself a bargain. Happy & smart hunting!!
Wish you would show some rug suggestions to go with Suzani pillows. Having the hardest time deciding if it’s too much pattern.
