Do you remember when you were in elementary school and Halloween parties involved gorging yourself on big chocolatey spider cupcakes and pumpkin sugar cookies? And remember playing silly games to win even more sugary goodies? School Halloween parties sure have changed! The “treats” at my youngest daughter’s school party were all healthy foods – vegetables, fruits, and cheese & crackers. I was in charge of the vegetable tray and wanted to do something to put a little spookiness in it!
Yeah, I know that Halloween is over (was yours fun??) but consider it an early Halloween idea for any of you who are planning to host a Halloween party in 2014 (and of course for all you moms in charge of next year’s vegetable tray 🙂
I filled the vegetable tray with warty witch fingers,
ogre ears,
and troll toes:
I wasn’t sure if the kids would eat the red and yellow peppers ogre ears, but they were the first veggies that were gone!
If you’d like to download this free printable of my veggie signs, that you can find the PDF {here}.
Simply cut out the signs, tape them to a toothpick on the back and stick them in a piece of celery to keep them standing upright.
In the center of the tray were two options for vegetable dip – ranch dressing and green goddess dressing. I transferred the dressings to $1 squeeze bottles (bought at Walmart) and added some spooky labels to them. I bought my labels at Party City but you can also find them at craft stores such as Jo-Ann’s or even search for free printable Halloween labels online.
I wish that I had taken a picture of how the tray looked after the party because even though I refilled it with more veggies than we started with and there was also lots of fruit and cheese & crackers, only about five celery pieces were left! Pretty impressive eating for a group of ten year olds!
So what were the Halloween parties like in your neck of the woods – sugary treats allowed or not??
Super cute idea!
This is so great! I hate saying no to my kids to all the sugar (gotta limit the candy intake)-and I think my kids would love this! Thanks for sharing!
