So that huge, epic snowstorm that was supposed to hit us Monday night? Not so huge. And definitely not epic. We only got about 8″ of snow and one day off of school. We were prepared to be snowbound slugs for days and even though that didn’t happen, we took our slugdom pretty seriously on the one day the kids were home with our only accomplishment being some pre-Valentine’s Day test cooking in the kitchen.
My girls’ favorite treat in the world is homemade marshmallows. And since we’re so close to Valentine’s Day, I thought we’d change things up a bit and try making marshmallow hearts. I made the marshmallows as usual (you can find my recipe for homemade marshmallows {here}) and just added in a few drops of red food coloring during the last minute of mixing. After letting them set in the pan for about 4 hours, we used a small heart cookie cutter to make our heart-shaped marshmallows:
They turned out great! Of course, after cutting out the hearts (we got around 50-60 hearts out of our batch) we were left with the cut-out remnants which my girls were only too happy to take care of. 🙂
And since homemade marshmallows MUST have some hot chocolate to go with them (especially on a snow day…), we did it up right:
Now that we know that the whole marshmallow heart thing works, our plan is to make another batch in a week or so and wrap them up for Valentine’s gifts for my daughters’ friends. I’m not sure yet how we’ll package them, but I was playing around with these little cake pop boxes that I have on hand and they’re the perfect size:
Now I need to come up with a cute marshmallow-related saying to attach to the treat boxes – any ideas? And while we’re talking about Valentine’s Day, what’s the status of your Valentine’s-related decorating – have you started doing anything? I’m seriously feeling like I just put away my Christmas stuff. My motivation to whip out the red, pink, and hearts is lacking big time. Sooo I may just dub these marshmallows “edible decorations” and call my holiday decorating complete, ok?
Glad the storm wasn’t as bad as the apocalypse that was predicted 🙂
Awesome Valentine’s idea, I am so doing that with the kids this weekend – they will love those! We are in full on Disney mode right now and counting down to vacation, so I will do Mickey marshmallows!
As for a verse – how about “We go together like Cocoa and Marshmallows” or “Everything is better with Marshmallows!” Have fun!
Oh my gosh – Micky ear marshmallows would be the cutest! I’m jealous about your upcoming trip!
I pinned the hearts : ) So pretty and I bet they are yummy too!
Thanks Gigi! Take it from a girl who typically isn’t that big on marshmallows – the homemade ones are amazing!
For a secret little surprise for your hubby….wrap up some of those special hearts and let him know he makes YOUR heart all soft and mushy! LOL
That would be sweet, wouldn’t it?! I could come up with a cute saying to go along with it too!
Love these beautiful marshmallows! They would be perfect for a Valentine’s tea! Following on Twitter.
Thanks Raquel! I’ve never even thought of a Valentine’s tea – love that idea actually!
I love love love how those came out Kris!! You and your girls know how to do the whole cocoa thing right!!
How about….”you melt my heart?” Too romantic for friends? I’ll think on that one 🙂
Thanks Lisa! You know how it goes – once they’re teens, it’s a no-go with anything sayings that are too mushy (which is, um, every Valentines saying?!)
They look so yummy!
Thanks Lauren – they are delish – we have been snacking on them every day since making them!
Sooo pretty and looks yummy too! Must try!
I’m not even much of a marshmallow fan but can devour my fair share of these – you should give them a try!
Thanks for the tip about organic weed killer. Can’t wait to try it. Also can’t wait to explore EBTH!
How about “No MUSH, just MELLOW” for sound-alike teen greeting? We’re trying your recipe today…sounds delish!
Such a cute idea!!!!
Kris – I found this recipe and is exactly what I’m looking for. I love this idea … how long are these marshmallows good for?
They actually stay fresh for a few weeks!
