In seven years, my oldest daughter goes to college. That thought totally blows my mind – seven years seems like a long way off, but I know it will be here before I know it. While I’m totally unprepared for even the thought of my daughter living away from home, she is already preparing for it. She has started cutting out pictures from all of the recent “back to college” catalogs and flyers that we’ve been getting in the mail to plan how she’ll decorate her dorm room. I kid you not. Must be those decorating-obsessed genes 🙂 After looking through my daughter’s clippings and doing some online searching of my own, I couldn’t believe how much cool stuff is out there for decorating girls’ dorm rooms. I know that many of you have children, nieces, other relatives, or friends starting college this fall so I created a dorm décor checklist to help with shopping for dorm room must-haves and I’ll share my favorite finds to help get you started in checking off your list. To make it a little more fun, I’m going to compare my horrible dorm décor from back “then” (think early ’90s!) when I was at college to my favorites from “now”. Ready?!
Twin XL Sheet Set
Then: The options for twin XL sheet sets were pretty much limited to solid colors. Mine were a mauvish color similar to these. Yes, mauve.
Now: There are tons of twin XL sheet options in fun patterns and vibrant colors. Two of my favorites are Pottery Barn Teen’s Cameron Paisley XL Sheet Set
and their super chic but more traditional Damask Sheet Set:
Now: Katie and Joan from Etsy shop Ivy Halls came up with the perfect solution – their reversible college duvet covers are made a little bit smaller than regular twin duvet covers so that they fit better in a typical dorm room where the bed is pushed up against the wall (but they will still accommodate a standard twin insert!). Brilliant!
Now: Pottery Barn Teen has a stylish, luxurious Futon Set with a super soft sherpa fleece cover
or, for smaller dorm rooms, Pottery Barn Teen has some great beanbags, such as this vibrant Suzani Printed Beanbag:
Then: The shower caddy holding my shampoo, toothpaste and brush, and other toiletries was a simple wire caddy:
Now: Vera Bradley has a water-friendly Shower Caddy (update: no longer available) with several large outside pockets. Their caddies come in three fun patterns, my favorite of which is Indigo Pop:
Now: Etsy shop Ivy Halls not only sells laundry bags in all sorts of fun colors and patterns but they can be monogrammed too!
That wraps up our list! If you have a dorm décor find that you’d like to add, be sure to leave a comment telling us about it! Also, if you or someone you know is college-bound, you’ll want to check back in on the blog later this week for the details about a fabulous giveaway!!
