Cord clutter – it’s hateful, right?! Something that’s always bothered me about our home office are the dangling cords under the desk in our built-ins. The cords and wires feed into the sides of the cabinets where our printer, cable box, and other TV components live so they’re necessary evils. Really ugly necessary evils.
Well guess what? Those ugly cords and wires picked a battle with the wrong girl – after a simple half hour DIY, they’re finally out of my sight…
So instead of walking into our home office and seeing this:
our built-ins are sporting a softer, less cord-cluttered look:
And it couldn’t be a simpler DIY – I’ll show you what I did! (post includes affiliate links – see my full disclosure statement {here}) All that you need is a small diameter tension rod (I bought {this one}), a length of fabric that’s twice the width of the area you’re covering (I used leftover fabric from our window seat cushion), and a sewing machine or fusible bonding web like Stitch Witchery. Simply cut the fabric to the right width and length for your space, fold over the top 1 ½″ – 2″ of fabric, iron it down, and then sew it along the bottom of the fold, creating a pocket for the rod. Finally, fold over ½″ of the edge of your fabric along the sides and bottom, iron it flat, and sew it in place.

Since you don’t see the unfinished side of the skirt, it doesn’t matter if you’re a terrible, can’t-sew-in-a-straight-line sewer like me. It will still look just fine from the front.

SUCH a great idea, and gives you the flexibility of unplugging items as needed (as opposed to the cord sleeves I installed this week – a little harder to remove the cord.) I like the way this little detail softens your room too, a solution with a silver lining!

Cute idea! I have another one now that I see this….buy 2 spring tension rods and sew in a double rod pocket, one on top and one on bottom and pull taught. You really wouldn’t need to do do a double with of fabric, just enough of the actual width of your space. The reason I’m suggesting this is your decor seems to be very clean modern lines and the shirted curtain seems a bit out of place. Also if you match a solid piece of fabric to your wall color it would really blend in seamlessly.
