Our Kitchen Remodel Before and After!!

Four months of living in a dust bowl without a kitchen, two huge winter storms leaving us without power for days, a conveyer belt moving bucket after bucket of concrete rubble from our jackhammered kitchen floor, unexpected reworking of sagging kitchen ceiling beams, delivery delays, orders getting lost… I was convinced at times that our kitchen renovation was 100% cursed but you guys, cursed or not it’s finally done!!!!!!!

You won’t find ten foot ceilings, soaring archways, or any of the other dramatic architectural details that you see in all the magazines but that’s actually the thing about our renovation that I’m most proud of. We were able to work with standard height (actually only 7 ½ feet!) ceilings and a builder’s basic rectangular layout to create a new kitchen that we couldn’t love more!

Before launching into all of my “before” and “after” pics (get ready… I took a ton!), I want to give a huge thanks to MasterBrand Cabinets, Monogram, Caesarstone, Blanco, Walker Zanger, Amerock, & Serena & Lily for partnering with me by providing some of the products used in my renovation. I sought all of these companies out because I love their products and knew they’d be perfect for our home and I’m honored that they trusted my vision enough to come along for the ride. So with that, let’s get going with my kitchen renovation reveal! (post includes affiliate links – full disclosure statement available {here})

Let’s start by throwing it back five years to the “before” when we first bought our covered-in-wallpaper home and our kitchen looked like this (it was almost a deal-breaker for us buying the house!):

Our kitchen when we bought the house!

Shortly after moving in we made a few small changes including taking down the wallpaper and window shade, painting the walls, our microwave in our island:

    Our kitchen before our renovation!

We thought we were going to be living in the house for only 2-3 years but once we realized it was going to be much longer than that, my original “let’s just change the countertops” project turned into a total gut job with no survivors:

    Our kitchen renovation in progress!

Fast forward to today and this is the “after” (aka our new kitchen!!!):

Love this newly remodeled kitchen with gray and white cabinets and brass accents! Such a huge difference from what it looked like before!

    Kitchen Cabinets

So much went down in the past 4-5 months that I don’t even know where to begin showing you around but let’s start with one of the biggest changes in this space – the cabinetry. Our old cabinets were original to the house and literally falling apart plus they had a very “country” feel so changing them up was a no-brainer. I went with a simple Shaker style (“Montgomery” from MasterBrand Cabinet’s Diamond line of cabinetry) that will stand the test of time and decided on white for the cabinets around the perimeter of the kitchen and a beautiful dark gray (Moonstone) for the island (which is about 40″ x 94″ measuring the countertops).

Whites can be really tricky but honestly Diamond’s standard white color couldn’t be more perfect – it blended with everything I threw at it (countertops, backsplash, hardware) without ever looking too warm or too cool:

Come see our newly remodeled kitchen with white shaker style overlay cabinets from Diamond's Montgomery line (they're the perfect shade of white!)

My cabinets have so many amazing interior features! Definitely check out my post on kitchen cabinet storage ideas to check them out in detail! but just to share a few favorites, I LOVE our new pantry. Like, love it so hard! Our old pantry was not only kinda ugly but totally dysfunctional – it was so shallow that I couldn’t even fit bigger cereal boxes in it without turning them to the side and taking up half the shelf:

    Our old narrow kitchen pantry

Our new pantry is super deep and has four large pull-out shelves that hold about double what our old pantry did:

A large pantry was a must-have for my kitchen remodel! LOVE my new tall & deep pantry with pull out shelves - so much storage space!

Check out my post on pantry organization ideas for all the details on how I whipped my pantry into organized shape!

Another favorite feature is the built-in paper towel holder above our trash cans – it’s one less thing cluttering up our countertops and I love that there’s extra space in the back to store additional rolls:

Love this built-in paper towel holder that's part of the kitchen cabinets! No more towel rolls sitting on the countertops!

I also have several game-changing new features integrated into my island cabinetry including a built-in toekick vacuum!) that have made working in the kitchen so much easier and more efficient. Even though I didn’t gain much square footage of cabinetry with the renovation, I can not only store more in my new cabinets than I used to be able to but everything is just so much easier to access. Having so many drawers instead of typical base cabinets with doors has made a world of difference!

    Kitchen Countertops

And can we talk about my new lighting and my lighter, brighter, and a heck of a lot prettier countertops??

Loving all of the deep drawer space in this long kitchen island (and love the shade of gray!)

I chose {these} beautiful open pendants (12.5″ small size) because with low ceilings, they go a long way to keeping the space feeling open and airy (for a similar look at a lower price, check out {these pendants}). And if you were involved in the great Instagram lightbulb debate, there’s a 50% chance you’re happy with the globe bulbs I went with and a 50% chance you’re not (I got a kick out of how everyone had such strong opinions about the right lightbulbs for these fixtures :)). For more details on the height & spacing of our kitchen island pendants and tips for figuring it out in your own kitchen, check out my post on the pendant light height over our island.

For our countertops, I’ve always loved the look of marble but was turned off on the idea of using it in our kitchen after having it in a bathroom where it ended up with all sorts of stains and etchings. I went on the hunt for the quartz countertop that looked the most like marble and I landed at Caesarstone’s Statuario Maximus. You guys, it is stunning! And since there’s not much variation from slab to slab, it was such a relief in the middle of the endless kitchen remodel decisions to have one less decision on my plate (the slabs are so similar that you don’t need to go to the stone yard to choose the specific ones you want like you do with marble or granite). And more importantly, it’s been unfazed by coffee spoons left on the countertop, dripping bowls of tomato soup, and every other potential stain situation that’s come its way.

The BEST marble look alike without all of the upkeep! Caesarstone's Statuario Maximus - check it out in this newly remodeled kitchen!

Some people love marble countertops and embrace the natural wear and markings (I have several friends with marble kitchens and they’re stunning!) but I’m a quartz girl all the way and will stick with getting my marble fix through my many marble cutting boards 🙂

Gorgeous round wood and marble cutting board!

    Kitchen Appliances

Another big change (and huge improvement) with my kitchen is my new Monogram appliances that are the perfect mix of beauty and function. The one that first caught my eye when I began appliance shopping was {this Monogram range} – it became the focal point of my new kitchen and is absolutely gorgeous! Like I want to stare at it and pet it all day gorgeous! And I love the functionality of never being short on burners, having a built in griddle, and having a smaller second oven that’s the perfect size for most of my daily baking.

Super gorgeous and functional range with six burners and double ovens. The small oven is perfect for most family meals!

I’m super happy with the big guy next to it too. Refrigerators are tough because I feel like you usually need to pick your poison – you can have a tall, shallow refrigerator with more limited storage space or you can have a big, bulky refrigerator that has tons of storage but is kind of a beast. While I admittedly often err on beauty over function if given the choice, after having had a refrigerator for the past five years that had the most limited storage space (it was hateful!), I ended up with what I think was the perfect solution – I chose {this Monogram counterdepth refrigerator} that doesn’t stick out into my kitchen nearly as far as a typical refrigerator would but it has almost as much storage space packed inside (the amount of food and drinks that I can fit into the door bins alone is insane).

My new counter-depth refrigerator that has a CRAZY amount of storage space! Details in post!

And after having been without a dishwasher for months and washing everything bent over in our bathroom tub, I basically wanted to cry tears of joy when our new dishwasher (found {here}) got installed. I love that the control panel is hidden on top and it recesses far enough back to be perfectly in line with my cabinet fronts and also that it sings to me when I open it 🙂 My dishwasher and refrigerator also have app integration so I get notifications when I’m low on dishwashing pods or someone left the refrigerator door open.

This Monogram dishwasher sits flush to the cabinets for a more built-in feel than most - love!

Oh and my microwave drawer – we can’t forget that because I wanted to thank you for your great advice when I was deciding between a freestanding microwave and microwave drawer. Almost all of you said to go with the microwave drawer and I’m so glad I listened because my whole family loves it!

I wasn't sure if I would like having a microwave drawer in my kitchen island, but I LOVE it! More details about it in my kitchen remodel reveal!

For all of the details of my kitchen appliances, check my post on the best kitchen appliance features

    Kitchen Tile

Where to next? How about that eye candy behind the range? I think every kitchen needs something that ties the colors in it together, and this Walker Zanger mosaic (Villa D’ Oro Granada) is what did it for mine. I seriously think that they must have created it with me in mind 🙂 because it’s so spot-on my style. Such a stunner! And the pot filler (available {here}) is the icing on the cake – love this pretty combo!

I am in LOVE with that mosaic tile accent behind the range! And that pot filler! All sources provided in the post!

Right next to it I have a {this round woven tray}) with some of my most-used utensils in {this beautiful marble and wood holder} that’s actually a wine cooler. I added a hand towel that’s easy to grab for getting a quick pot off the stove or wiping a spill and several patterned white bowls that we grab constantly for cereal, ice cream, and snacks.

The perfect set-up for next to your range! A round woven tray holds most-used utensils in a pretty marble holder, a hand towel, and white patterned bowls!

For those of you who have been following my kitchen renovation since way back when I was first starting to work on a design plan, you might remember that I really struggled with whether or not to remove our kitchen fireplace. It really was such a lovely feature of the old kitchen but at the same time the placement of the fireplace made it impossible to fully use the space.

The area by our kitchen window before our renovation!

While I still have a little bit of guilt about demoing it, I’m so glad that I did because it allowed us to continue our cabinets down the long wall, wrap them around the window wall and have full use of the space:

Love this long wall of windows and the open wood shelving that wraps around the corner!

    Oak Open Corner Shelving

Where the fireplace once was, we now have both upper and lower cabinets as well as open corner shelving made with 2″ oak that’s one of my favorite features of our new kitchen! You can find all of the details of how we created our open corner shelving in my post on floating corner shelves.

The brick fireplace in our kitchen
Open wood shelving that wraps around the corner - one of my favorite details of this kitchen remodel!

It was so fun finding little pretties for the shelves to add in along with some old favorites:

Totally stealing ideas for what to put on my open kitchen shelving - love these accessories! Also how the shelves wrap around the corner!

Corner Shelf Sources: Glass hurricane vase |  Floral recipe tin  | White ceramic pitcher |  Small white bowls | Twisted wood serving utensils | Glass bottles with stoppers | Gray striped planter

    Kitchen Sink & Faucet

Demoing the fireplace also allowed me to fulfill my dream of having something to stare at other than a wall when I do dishes. Instead of this lovely dishwashing view:

Our old kitchen faucet and sink

I now have this beautiful one looking out at our wooded front yard – love!:

Gorgeous bridge faucet and big farmhouse sink - gorgeous! Sources linked in post!

I’m never going to tell you that I now like doing dishes but I will tell you that I like it a whole heck of a lot more than I used to! The faucet was something that I debated back and forth on for quite a bit but I ended up choosing {this bridge faucet with sprayer} – I wasn’t sure if having two handles instead of one would be annoying but so far so good.

And I debated about sink size too since this 33″ baby (Blanco’s Cerana II available {here} seemed so huge compared to the microsink I used to have but some friends pushed me to go big and they were right! It’s so nice having the extra space and I also love that the sink is so deep that it hides my dirty dishes when I don’t put them in the dishwasher right away. The added little pretties of the cute striped tray, wood scrubber, and gray striped towel complete my little dishwashing space.

Beautiful bridge faucet with sprayer and the cutest tray and scrubber too! Sources linked in post!

Continuing on down that window wall, previously we had a short length of shallow cabinetry along with double doors leading into our dining room:

The old cabinetry in the corner of our kitchen

Now, the current line of cabinetry simply dead-ends into the wall – I was surprised to find that so much of the glassware I stored in the old cabinets is now easily stored in the bank of drawers on the end. They hold much more than I would have thought!

Other changes here include removing the double doors to the dining room so that we have a simple cased opening instead and adding some beautiful artwork (available {here}) and a potted plant which adds so much life to the space!

The perfect piece of art for a gray and white kitchen! Click through for source and more pics of this fabulous kitchen renovation!

I also wanted to add in just a few small touches of bling to liven up the space! I love soft gold finishes and while I kept my big ticket items (appliances, faucet, and pot filler) in stainless, I added gold pendant lighting and gold cabinet hardware throughout my kitchen. I didn’t use any knobs but instead went for all pulls, including these Amerock golden champagne pulls (available {here} and {here} ) for my cabinet doors,

Gorgeous soft brass pulls - perfect for a kitchen update. Come in several sizes!

the longer 12″ appliance pull version of the same pulls (available {here}) for our kitchen island drawers,

Beautiful soft brass pulls that look amazing on the gray cabinets (and on the white ones in this kitchen too!)

and then these Amerock golden champagne cup pulls (available {here} and {here}) on all of the other kitchen drawers:

LOVE these cup pulls used on the kitchen drawers - a gorgeous updated look! Source linked in post!

    Kitchen Flooring

And last but not least, let’s talk flooring – I couldn’t be happier to see that Saltillo tile go! In it’s place, we added Hallmark wood floors (Alta Vista in Malibu) and it’s beyond gorgeous! It’s pre-finished flooring so it went in before anything else in the kitchen did and I was totally neurotic about keeping the floors covered throughout the renovation (just ask my contractor – I’m pretty sure he thought I was nuts) – it was so worth it because they add so much warmth and beauty to the space:

Gorgeous engineered wood flooring used throughout this kitchen! Hallmark's Alta Vista flooring in Malibu

Of course, Hope’s not too impressed with anything that’s not cushy soft so you’ll find her hanging in her dog bed or over on our new little rug (found {here}) in front of the sink:

The perfect gray and white indoor/outdoor rug for a kitchen or entry!

The rattan counter stools at our new island (found {here}) do a lot to warm up the space too! I’ve been ogling these stools for years so choosing them was an easy decision – they ended up being the perfect addition to our kitchen and really help tie it all together:

Love the color of this long, dark gray kitchen island with counter height seating!

Now that it’s done, I seriously wish I could have all of you guys over for a big kitchen party – I feel like you waded through the renovation trenches with me and that made it so much more fun for me! I’ll be sharing more details about my cabinets and appliances in future posts along with our kitchen eat-in area that also got a facelift but if you have any questions, throw them at me! I’d also just love to hear what you think about my new space – tell me in the comments!!

I love what you did with the place. Especially all the convenient little touches you did; the pot filler over the stove, love that. The paper towel spool which is placed where it should be and not on the counter taking up space. The microwave in the nice over sized island, love the color by the way, I think that it may be more convenient there than over the stove the way a lot of us have it or on the counter taking up space. And that pantry, what a fabulous pantry with pull out drawers, nothing can get lost in the back. You really thought things out and did a marvelous job doing it. Well done!!!

What an absolutely gorgeous kitchen! Clearly so much thought and care went into every detail. And it’s not just pretty, it looks practical and functional too – a real kitchen for real people – my favorite kind! So much inspiration. The Riviera stools are next on my wish list. I hope they are as comfy as they are cute!

And I’m so happy you’re happy with the micro draw! We have loved ours so much. And YES to Quartz in the kitchen! And you know how I feel about grey islands! Kris this kitchen is seriously perfection. My favorite area (though I love it ALL and I mean that) is your kitchen window, sink, paper towel/garbage area, floor vacuum, dishwasher spot!!!!! That window view is gorgeous.

One question on the refrigerator? What finish is on it? Is it finger and smudge proof?

Kris, you are truly amazing and I love all your ideas via your blog and Instagram posts. You are sensible, down to earth, have brilliant affordable ideas, and you give all of us with regular homes and layouts something to use in our own homes.

Enjoy and congratulations! Look forward to your laundry room renovation next.

        Hi Gabrielle,
Yes we had to replace the window because the old window went a lot lower down – the bottom of it was below the level of the new cabinets that went in. So the new one is shorter but wider!

Well…all I can say is “it’s drop dead GORGEOUS!” If I had to redo my kitchen, I would do it exactly like yours. You got every detail “spot on” and you certainly do not need soaring cathedral ceilings or more square footage because your kitchen is perfection! I did mine 13 years ago and still love it and my white cabinets have, as you said, stand the test of time. I have a 48” Wolf range very similar to yours and I still am madly in love with it. If I had to change one thing, I’d switch out my black honed granite countertops to the beautiful quartz that you used. Love that you mixed goods and silvers and the accent behind your range is magnificent. Our remodel was 6 months and when our kitchen was done, I didn’t remember one thing about those times washing dishes in the tub! Congratulations! Enjoy your new kitchen for years to come!

I think this is the nicest kitchen makeover I’ve ever seen on any blog! You are amazing at designing and picking just the right colors and details! I have been excited to see how it all came together and know you are super excited about it, too now that all the dust has settled! My kitchen is so small and has a breakfast eating area attached. I have a question. Did you eliminate your breakfast eating area and just go with a larger island and stools or is it just not in the pictures? If it’s still there, how did you tie it in? I have seriously thought about eliminated the space of my breakfast area to allow me to have a larger, more functional kitchen. But I don’t know if I want to use my dining room for all my meals. Just wondering your thoughts. Congrats again on this stunning reveal!

Wow – those are just the sweetest words! We still have our breakfast area – I’ll be sharing its new look on an upcoming post! Our kitchen has a weird layout because the breakfast area was a later add-on – when you walk into the kitchen from the hallway, the main kitchen is on the right and the breakfast area is on the left. We actually considered getting rid of the breakfast area to make a bigger kitchen but since there is a big space separating the main kitchen and breakfast area in our house, there was no way to make the entire kitchen continuous by doing so. If your breakfast area is right there next to the rest of the kitchen, I would absolutely consider combining them for one large kitchen and making your dining room a bit more casual and just using that for meals!

Oh Kris your kitchen is so lovely and functional. Love the brass accents- the drawer pulls andl lights are fabulous!! Our kitchen are so similar with the gray island and white perimer counters and quartz countertops. Glad you love the microwave drawer and all the pull out drawers on the island. Quick question: How thick and wide are your wood shelves and how were they attached to the tile? Where did you purchase them? Do you know how much weight they will supoort (ie can you put dinner places on them?

Thank you Sheryl! Our shelves are 2″ thick and 10″ wide and they are attached with floating shelf brackets that went in before the tile (I got them on Amazon) – I’ll share a few more details on an upcoming post since I took some in-progress pics! The one end is also screwed into the upper cabinet for additional support. I don’t know the exact weight they’ll hold but they’re incredibly sturdy so I feel like I can put plates or whatever else I want on them.

          Wonderful kitchen and beautifully done!
I have a question about the Hallmark Alta Vista flooring. I got a peak of the adjacent wood floors in one of your pictures that look like they are regular wood floors. How does the “wood look” of the Luxury Vinyl transition to the wood floor in the adjacent room? I have the this problem and want to use this relatively new product in my kitchen reno too.

            Hi Maria,
Our adjoining rooms are traditional hardwoods while our kitchen floors actually aren’t Hallmark’s luxury vinyl – they’re Hallmark’s engineered hardwood. So they’re both the same material but they are a different finish. I chose a transition strip between the two that picked up colors of both to ease the transition but it is still apparent. I don’t like the finish of the floors in the rest of our house and hope to redo them someday and just didn’t think it made sense to put something in the kitchen that I didn’t love just so things would match. It does help that I was able to run the kitchen flooring in a different direction to the flooring in the rooms next to it! Hope that helps!

I have stored so many of your pictures in my files for when I do my kitchen renovation. I don’t think there is a single decision you made that could be regretted. WOW! You nailed this in every possible way! Thanks for taking so much time to give all the details, sources, ID’s etc on everything.

As much detail as you put into this, I do have one question. We are currently on the hunt to upgrade to our “Barbie Dream House” and it’s looking like the area where we want to buy is likely going to necessitate me gutting a dated kitchen. I know the microwave drawer thing is all the rage now, but as I pretty much only reheat coffee in the micro, we keep imagining that it will slosh all over when we pull out the drawer. Do you have to be extra careful opening the drawer if you are heating something liquid?

That’s actually a great question – I don’t know if all microwave drawers are like this but our Monogram one operates electronically instead of you pulling it in and out – you push a button to open it and close it so it’s very smooth and don’t slosh things around at all! I really love it!

My kitchen Reno was unplanned ( we had a water disaster from the 2nd floor las April and it ended up destroying my kitchen) but I’m glad to say we’re almost done too! Love Caesarstone as well since I’m keeping my old ones from before. Your right about the marble, the etching kills me, but since countertops weren’t destroyed by water insurance won’t cover so I kept them. But with the new cabinetry it looks beautiful once again! Absolutely LOVE your kitchen remodel! My kitchen is very similar, in fact I have the same pendants over a lighter gray island in my kitchen surrounded by white shaker style cabinets! 🙂 In fact, I’m about to replace my cooktop with a professional range and I’ve been seriously considering changing all my cabinet hardware to a gold/brass tone. I do have one question- did the difference in tone between the Amerock golden champagne hardware and the more “brassy” tone of the pendants give you pause? I have the golden champagne Amerock hardware in other rooms of my home and it seems to be a different tone altogether. I’ve been agonizing over how it will look in my kitchen and need some reassurance! 🙂

That’s a good question because you’re right – they are both very different shades of gold. I honestly wasn’t sure how they would look but since the pendants are up high and away from any of the hardware, it’s worked just fine – the difference doesn’t bother me a bit!

Unbelievable. I have been researching for a year …fancy magazines, well known designers, local consultants, visiting peoples homes…and you have been the first one to nail it completely. Please tell me you do this for a living…wherever you live. You need to share that talent and be paid handsomely for it. I hesitate to ask, but I have been agonizing over several things with my kitchen and I am stuck and can not move forward. My poor hubby is so tired of it…It is fairly large , with a large peninsula for casual dining and a large table w two leaf inserts with chandelier. I also have a huge (long) walk in pantry between the family room and kitchen. Several folks have wanted to move the walk in butlers pantry somewhere else or make it a top to bottom pantry in the kitchen area. This would not completely open the two rooms , but make them a little closer and would give us 7 more feet on the exterior wall for windows. The new space would be used to mainly put in a large kitchen window like yours .. at least 78″ long and down to the sink with a bit of open shelving. I would like to know the type and size of your windows and your thoughts on this change. My current window is very small but I am willing to get rid of the top cabinets on that exterior wall in the existing footprint , .especially since I have a walkin pantry. The peninsula could then be moved to an island and be very long..as much as 95″. Alternatively, I could get a 60″ window down to countertop, leaving the walkin butlers pantry between the rooms. The decision to move peninsula to an island is till there …but it would be a shorter island if I did so. The ceiling is tongue in groove with recessed lighting so walls, ceiling, flooring, lighting would all need to be addressed if we remove the pantry from this location. The current opening between the family room and kitchen is a short open hallway w a larger than normal opening between the two rooms. My last child is in college so my husband and I are 72 and 60 and a bit of empty nesters after 6 kids. Costs are definitely different. I am tired of it and I don’t want to do the wrong thing just to save 15,000 when I am already this far gone. Cabinetry is 30 years old and shot… QUARTZ is the bomb…I have told so many of my friends NOT to get marble and the kitchen folks, cabinet people keep selling it. They end up going back and getting the marble honed to deal with etchings. If you don’t even respond to this crazy post, I will understand. Can I email you pictures and pay you???

It sounds like you need to see all the details in a drawing/diagram of the changes you want to make. If you can find a computer designer or visual artist near you that is willing to, they can illustrate it with a computer program so you can see the outcome. I don’t mean an interior designer or kitchen designer, but someone who can show you views or even a walk-through of the existing space and the new space on the computer! I’m retired too and faced a similar dilemma. It worked wonders for me and my husband to hash out the details. Good Luck!

Thanks Patti! I worked with a designer from MasterBrand (the cabinet company) to figure out the layout of the cabinetry but made all of the other design choices (cabinet colors & style, countertops, tile, hardware, flooring, appliances, sink, wall color, molding, window size, open shelving design, etc.) myself.

The vent itself is a Monogram vent – you can find more details in this post: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/choosing-best-kitchen-appliances/ The wood cover is something that I sketched out and my carpenter custom made for me!

Around how much did this reno cost, without appliances. I’m looking to do a very similar kitchen reno and love your choices. Just trying to see if they are in my price range or not. Thank you in advance for any help!! Great idea on the countertops btw. I love white marble and have it in two of my bathrooms but the etching and staining drives me crazy. Your choice of alternative is fantastic!

My costs were completely different than what this would cost someone else because I had major electrical working because of the age of my house, a demolition crew that came in to demo the floor, and so many more things that wouldn’t be needed in a typical kitchen. Things weren’t itemized out in my contractor bills so I don’t have a good cost estimate to share unfortunately.

Your kitchen turned out beautifully. We are in the midst of a similar renovation. We have a 1960 oceanfront cottage that sustained quite a bit of damage in Hurricane Florence. With all the necessary work and repairs needed, we decided to take the opportunity to totally renovate our small U shape kitchen.

We actually selected the same cabinets as you, in the shaker style Gresham. Also in white for the outside and we selected Maritime with Greystone artisan stain for the island. We are going with Curava recycled glass counter tops in Arctic.

I had a lot of fun choosing the various cabinets and drawers. Organization was very important to me too. We went with the same double drawers with the roll out tray. And a huge pantry with pullouts and fold outs etc. I had to do some trade offs. Passing on a special mixer cabinet for a standard roll out tray cabinet. And choosing a 12 inch utensil pull out over the 15 inch one with the knife block.

Our new kitchen is an L shape, with the end run of counter turning into a banquette that will wrap the corner in front of a bank of windows, much like your new sink.

My last decisions are the back splash and flooring and lighting. We also have low, barely 8’ ceilings, which will be tongue and groove painted pine (like the original that we had to tear out).

I’d love to get your suggestions on some of the finishing touches!

Hello! I love your kitchen! We are beginning our kitchen remodel April 1. We will have white cabinets, white subway tile and quartz counters too… I planned to do a brushed nickel faucet and pulls and lighting to go with it… However, what you’ve done with mixing the metals has me curious if I should go with the same pulls you have. My inspiration for our kitchen is a Rifle Paper Co. 2019 Lemon wall calendar and the accents are gold! I have ALWAYS been a brushed nickel person and matchy matchy and now I am conflicted!!! Lol! Can you tell me how you came about selecting the gold pulls and gold lighting (which I also love!) We also have an island that will be SW Kendall Green which matches the lighter green leaves in the calendar. I would love you input! I am terrible at making decisions! Thank you!!!

Hi Stephanie! I love gold but also wanted to make my timeless and something that most people would like for when we go to resale. So I used gold just for the cabinet hardware and lighting which would be easy to change out down the road if I wanted to or a future buyer wanted to. Also, I just love the brass pop against the white cabinets. I actually love mixing finishes – I think it makes spaces more interesting! Good luck with your renovation!

      Hi Kris,

I’m now at the stage of buying hardware for my cabinets. I was wondering about various sizes for cabinets and mixing it up with cups and bars. My island has a set of those 36 inch wide double drawers with the secret drawer inside (like the one you have your command center in I think) so I was thinking 12″ bars on that one. But I’m sure you used smaller ones for your various other size doors and cabinets. I’m going a little crazy thinking about whether to try keeping the island all bars for a cleaner look or mixing it up. It includes:
      36″ double drawers
21″ pull out waste can with drawer above (instead of the paper towel holder)
12″ utensil holder that pulls out
So all of these cabinets actually pull out – nothing opens/swings open – I’m thinking perhaps all bars on these, even on the one drawer above the trash, would make it look very sleek, clean lines

Did you use a variety of sizes of bars on your different size doors?

Just curious about the size of your island and the spacing on your pendants (we are thinking of getting the same ones). Our island will be 96″ long and 2 pendants seems like it may be too few, while three might be too much. Any thoughts and info would be greatly appreciated.

My question is, what would you recommend as complimentary flooring for our mudroom that that transitions to the the hardwood? Hi Kris,

I bought the same Blacno Farmhouse sink (30″ instead of 33″) and having a slight issue with my cabinet designer & installer. They keep telling us they cannot install the sink because the edges are not straight. If you see the manufacturer specification there is a 2 degree slope from top to bottom. I was wondering if you had the same issue with your cabinet designer. I understand the cabinet needs to be custom, how did they or you achieve how your sink looks in the front? The front apron looks flawless in your pictures.

      Thank you!

How hard and pricey is it to rip out the tile? We’re doing a renovation and most of the house has tile–it’s not saltillo, but it is a heavy, fired clay tile. If it were saltillo, I’d probably keep it because the color is a little prettier than ours. Ours is a redder, darker tone. I’m torn between appreciating it — in a 1970’s Texas house and taking the easy way out vs ripping it up to put in something else.

Are you still liking this option? My other corner (where you dead end) is going to have a blind corner which will give be a cabinet. I am thinking I do not want 2 corner cabinets and leaning to doing the corner drawers. So drawers or lazy susan?

I absolutely love my corner drawers and find them so much more functional than a lazy Susan. Since they’re angled in the corner they’re super long which makes my top drawer perfect for long utensils that are sometimes hard to find a spot for.

Beautiful! So wonderful to see the renovation process from start to finish! Thank you! I have a question as far as the two pendent lights over the island. If you wanted to do two pendents over a table that was just about as long as the counter that you have, with a ceiling height that is similar, would you use the same formula as far as height to hang and distance apart? Thanks so much!

Thank you! I think the formula would be similar for over a table but I might tweak it a bit and move the pendants in from the ends just a little from what you come up with for the island lighting formula since you don’t want a pendant too close to the table end where someone is sitting.

Hi Kris – I really like your kitchen transformation – in fact, it has been an inspiration point for my own kitchen reno – especially your pantry. I am about to finish up with the reno, and, after perusing nearly a dozen different options, I’ve landed on the Amerock Blackrock pulls in black bronze. I have been agonizing over sizing – 5″? or 6 5/16″?? – as I have quite a variety of cabinet and drawer sizes in both width (18, 24, 36″) & height (anywhere from 24-48″H). How did you determine which size to place where? I think I read somewhere in your comments that you based it on ratio/proportion of your individual cabinets – what was your rationale? I am quite undecided as to what to do as I’ve also read recommendations against mixing/matching pull sizes. Neither 5 nor 6 5/16″ is an equal fraction/proportion of standard cabinet sizes, so I’m really struggling to find my own rationale for sizing, etc. I’d love your thoughts on this – it might help me get to a decision! 🙂

Great job on the kitchen remodel. It looks great. I have a question about the paper towel holder. What are you doing with the space behind the holder? Since the paper towel isn’t very long and there’s plenty space behind it if this were a regular pull out drawer, I am wondering if that space can be used.

      Thanks.

Your kitchen is gorgeous but I’m confused on why the paper towel holder is on top of the pull out trash. Doesn’t the constant use of the trashcan get the paper towel dirty?

Hello. I’m new on here and just came across your new kitchen. It’s gorgeous by the way. How big is your kitchen? We’re getting ready to renovate a basement to live in. The rooms are already formed by concrete so no moving walls around and I really would like an island like you have. I just don’t know if I’d have the room. I don’t want to lose a bunch of cabinet space either. Right now I’m just in the planning stages.

      HI KRIS –
I love your house, ideas, etc. I’m in the mist of redoing some of my kitchen. I love the size of your window over the sink
can you give me the size and the make? That’s exactly what I’m looking for. I currently have a dinky window over the sink and it’s too small. So my plan is to take out some cabinets and put in a bigger window with open shelving on the left side of the window. It’s what it needs. It will give the kitchen some depth and light. Plus, I look out at beautiful woods with the occasional fawns from a distance.

I appreciate your feedback & keep up the great work!

Hi! Couple of questions re: your kitchen. How long is your kitchen island and how many inches do you have between the island and the counters and the island on the seat side and the wall behind it. We are remodeling our kitchen and I’m starting to worry our space is going to be tight. I appreciate your comment about the low ceilings and open lighting. Very helpful, thank you!

Measurement details on our island can be found in this post: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/height-pendant-lights-over-kitchen-island/. We have 36″ between the island counters and the wall which is the minimum distance you’d want to have.

Thank you! I decided on an approximate size that I wanted it based on the size of my range and then laid the tile out and determined the final exact size based on where it made sense to cut off the pattern so that it was exactly the same on the left & right sides and on the top and bottom.

Love your sink and I’m considering this kind also for our remodel in a few months! I have a few questions on your sink:
1-Does it scratch/crack easily? Not just the inside, but the outside if someone leans on it with a belt buckle? I’m reading mixed reviews so curious if it’s been ok for you.
2-What helped you decide on a single basin? I’ve only ever used a double basin -I use one side for dirty and the other for air drying hand washed items. I worry if a single basin will be practical?
3-Do you use a sink grid?
      Thank you!

Hi Michelle – I’ve been VERY happy with our sink – it doesn’t have a single scratch on it after having it for a few years now. I do have a sink grid for it but never used it – some people like them because they help prevent scratching but I think that having to clean around it is too much of a paint. I’ve always been someone who hates double basin sinks – I like to be able to lay large flat pans and dishes flat to soak so that decision was a no brainer for me but if you like a divided sink for putting your air dry dishes you might want to stick with that. I either hand dry or lay my air dry dishes on a towel on the counter. Hope that helps!

Hi Kris, Just one more question. I love that you used different size pulls. They look beautiful. I see that the pulls on your lower cabinets are shorter than the upper. I’m assuming they are the 5 and 6 inch respectively. Is that right? Where did you use the 3 inch pulls? Thank you so much for your time. 😊

Hi Kris, since your sink is reversible, which side of the sink corner style did you choose for the apron front? It says there is a traditional side (which I assume is the wider corner edge) and contemporary side (I assume is the smaller corner edge). I bought the same sink and my contractor mentioned the wider edge would stick out more than the other?

Hello! I am new to your blog and I love it!!! This kitchen reno is stunning. Truly! I do have a question though about the crown. You carried it across the top of the tiled sink wall but did not carry it over the floating shelves nor the rang. I can see over the rang would have been tight and perhaps maybe look a little fussy, but I was just curious about the decision not to carry it over/above the floating shelves. Again, I think this is just stunning kitchen and I cannot wait to dig into your site more thoroughly.

Oh, one more thing, some one asked in an earlier comment about the rang hood shroud. Did your contractor make this or is this from MasterBrand Cabinet’s Diamond Cabinetry?

HI—I am basically trying to copy your entire kitchen. I’m in love with all of your cabinet hardware ( I ordered samples of each). I love your wall color. I may go light grey but I adore that color, Cloud White. Do you have a favorite grey that you might have picked for your kitchen if I were to go the grey route? I am tracking down your exact countertop now. I’m in STL and I am already dealing with a place so I’m seeing if they can get it for me. Now—-I need your backsplash. I can’t find the AKDO subway tiles locally. Any advice? I also love the edging around the backsplash inset. I wish I could find a subway tile with that kind of edging for my backsplash inset. I also love your inset tile but that might be out of my price range—but I’m looking into it. I am not sure I am brave enough to go with a color I might have to just make the subway tiles go in a herringbone pattern within the inset,. Any thoughts you have on any of this? and thank you! you are a wonderful designer! I am so glad I stumbled upon your blog!

We’re currently finishing (hired people, not us working on it) the 3rd of 3 bathrooms. It’s been slow and frustrating between shortage of materials and workers. But as that happened, I planned the kitchen remodel. It’s amazing that your kitchen is so close to what I have planned! (I even have similar accessories!) I love the stove area and hope to have a similar design, moving the over stove microwave. I’d like to know the pros and cons of the microwave drawer. Is being lower down working okay when you take out hot foods? I’m also intrigued with the drawers for glasses. I have a couple of drawers planned for the grandkids’ plastic glasses and bowls but never considered other glasses.) How is that working out? If you could share a photo of how it looks inside the drawers I’d appreciate it. I’m short so half the shelves in cabinets are above my reach so will have many drawers.

Hi Kris, we are using the same pulls and cups and trying to decide on 1 pull versus 2 pulls on our longer drawers. Did you find yourself only using one side of the cup pulls on your drawers that have 2 and if so, does it go off track at all? What helped you determine when to do 1 vs 2? Lastly, what helped you determine to use the appliance size vs 2 of the largest regular sized bar pulls?
