Our Kitchen Eat-In Area Reveal!

Along with all of the huge changes we made in our full kitchen renovation this year, we also made some smaller ones in our adjoining kitchen eat-in area that I’m excited to share with you guys today! The layout of our entire house, including our kitchen is a bit unusual because it’s an old house that’s been added onto several times, all before we bought it. One of those additions is our kitchen eat-in area that adjoins the main part of our kitchen – do you see that short wall to the left with our ancient thermostat? That used to be the back of the house so we’re lucky that someone had the vision to bust through and add on this additional space!

Our newly remodeled kitchen eat-in area!

What we weren’t so lucky about is that the flooring of our eat-in space was never totally even with the flooring of the main area of the kitchen – there was an unlevel row of tile right where the two spaces met that was notorious for causing people to trip. As part of our kitchen renovation we wanted to make the floor of the two spaces 100% even with each other – it was a wish that through the domino effect got us to the point that an excavation crew was jackhammering out the concrete slab of our eat-in area and loading the rubble onto a conveyer belt (he’s shoveling right about where our kitchen table goes!):

Excavating our cement floor

Looking back I’m not sure quite how we made it through our crazy reno but we somehow muddled through and this same view six months later now looks like this:

Kitchen eat-in area with tall upholstered banquette, wood table, slipcovered dining chairs, and capiz pendant

Our floors are now not only level but instead of the red saltillo tile that was previously in this space, we have engineered hardwoods (Hallmark’s Alta Vista flooring in Malibu) that run throughout the main area of the kitchen into our eat-in space (with no spots to trip on!). In case you happened to have forgotten what the old tile looked like, this is a “before” pic of both our kitchen and eat-in area when we bought our house:

Our old kitchen eat-in area!

We did a little table switch up too! The old table seemed a bit too chunky with the new, more streamlined feel of the space so we sold our previous office desk (my last remaining piece of mahogany furniture – woo hoo!) and moved our old kitchen table into our home office where it fit right in!

Reclaimed wood trestle table used as a desk in our home office!

I took a long time looking for a new kitchen table since it needed to be a trestle table to work with our banquette and I also wanted to keep the price reasonable – I ended up choosing {this wood trestle table} which works beautifully!

The perfect wood trestle dining table for your kitchen!

We previously didn’t have a rug under our kitchen table but now that we have wood flooring, it was a little too much “wood on wood” for me. I had fallen so in love with the rug we have by our kitchen sink that I bought it in a larger size for under our kitchen table (I found it {here}).  I love the pattern and since it’s an indoor/outdoor rug, it’s super easy to clean when there are stains or spills.

We also added new lighting to our eat in area! We previously had only recessed can lighting in this space but during the renovation I had our electrician wire it for a light fixture over the kitchen table. I chose {this capiz honeycomb pendant} c/o Serena & Lily (mine is the 22.5″ D version) and love the look of it and how the gold honeycombs tie in some of our gold accents (including {these gold pendants over our island}, {these pulls} on our cabinet doors, and {these pulls on our cabinet drawers}) in the main area of our kitchen.

Gorgeous lighting for over a kitchen table! Capiz honeycomb pendant - source linked in post!

Scroll & Click/Tap to Shop this Space:

I kept the banquette (no way am I changing out that baby after all the work that went into it – those details {here}) but I changed up the pillows on it to a pretty gray and lavender combo including {these tasseled beauties on the ends}, {these gray medallion pillows}, and {this lavender embroidered floral} that I snagged from our guest bedroom.

Pretty combination of lavender and gray pillows!

My husband thinks it’s ridiculous how I keep our banquette stuffed with so many pillows and I totally admit that it does require a few minor acrobatics to get yourself nestled into a spot for dinner. But once you’re nestled in, it’s super comfy and I love it! One of my daughters feels the same way I do and the other is Team Jeff so it works out perfectly – the two pillow lovers get the banquette seating and the other two get the two chairs!

Super inexpensive white slipcovered dining chairs! Source linked in post!

And speaking of our chairs, we have two of IKEA’s HENRIKSDAL chairs with {these long white slipcovers} – I was deciding between these IKEA chairs and {these slipcovered dining chairs} and am not sure if I made the right decision. The IKEA chairs were definitely a great price which was why I ended up choosing them but they’re also less comfortable than I expected them to be (we have a HENRISKDAL chair in my oldest daughter’s room and it’s much softer!). I’m hoping they’ll soften up a bit in time – we will see!

I’ll share a little bit about the accessories on my table too!

Love the natural, textured look of this tablescape! All sources (including that pretty vase!) linked in the post!

I finally got around to waxing our kitchen table to protect the finish (I did this with our old kitchen table too – a how-to post is on the way!) so I was able to take off the tablecloth we were using and use a runner instead. I chose one that’s full of beautiful textures and I just love the tasseled ends.

Gorgeous textured table runner with fringed ends!

The salad bowl is {this whitewash mango wood serving bowl} (I slip a glass bowl inside of it because no matter what the labels say, I don’t trust wood bowls to be food safe 🙂 ) and for serving utensils I have {these gorgeous spiral salad servers} – love these and always get so many compliments on them!

Gorgeous wood serving bowl and spiral salad servers! Source linked in post!

For our centerpiece, I used this beautiful wood vase that I bought several months back (I found it at Target but unfortunately it’s no longer available):

Gorgeous round acacia wood vase - source linked in post!

I think you guys have probably seen everything else I’ve got on the table at one time or another since they’re all things I already had. My woven chargers are thrifted but they’re super similar to {these hyacinth placemats} – I love them because their texture makes every tablesetting prettier! My plates are {these Juliska plates} that I scored at their local warehouse sale, napkins are {these center stripe woven napkins} that come in several color options (and are on sale right now!), and glasses are {these stemless gold beauties}.

Beautiful, simple table setting with woven chargers and black stripe napkins

We have our salt and pepper in {this wood pepper mill} and {this salt grinder} and some unground sea salt in {this marble salt cellar}:

Pretty wood salt and pepper shaker and grinder plus sea salt in a salt cellar!

And at the far end of the table is {this glass + brass pitcher} (it’s supposedly a “martini pitcher” but I think it’s a gorgeous water pitcher!) and {this honey jar with wood dipper}. We LOVE honey and biscuits! I wish I could tell you that I made my own from scratch but these are Pillsbury Grands – don’t judge, they’re pretty good! 🙂

That honey jar is the cutest! Love the brass banded glass pitcher too! Both are linked in the post!

At the other end of our kitchen, I kept it pretty much the same with our rolling baker’s rack that’s home to the lanterns we use on our patio, extra tablecloths and outdoor throws, some storage bins, and extra dinnerware. I got this rolling rack at the RH Outlet but recently found a very similar, less expensive version {here}.

Our rolling bakers rack is perfect for adding storage space to our kitchen!

Everything on here is an oldie but goodie that I’ve had for a while other than the two new white + bamboo storage bins that I snagged {here} – one of them holds all of our dog stuff (extra leashes, poop bags, etc.) and the other holds my cleaning rags:

Our open rolling baker's rack holds extra tablecloths, outdoor throws, bins with dog supplies, and more!

And one last thing to share with you – our new door hardware (and new door color too)! The door to our garage is off of the kitchen and I decided to paint it to match our kitchen island to help keep the space cohesive:

We painted the door gray to match the gray of our island! Love this idea!

I actually first tried to color match paint to a sample of my kitchen island (which is “Moonstone” – a color option in MasterBrand’s Diamond line of cabinets) and the match was horrible so then I just snagged some dark gray color strips from various brands and Benjamin Moore’s Charcoal Slate looked like a close match so I gave it a try – it was almost a perfect match!

Door is painted Benjamin Moore Charcoal Slate - a beautiful dark gray paint color!

Once I added our new hardware (it’s Emtek’s modern rectangle rosette + modern crystal Windsor knob in Satin Brass available {here} c/o Emtek), I knew it was a gray + gold match made in heaven – love!!!! It’s truly the perfect mix of modern and traditional:

GORGEOUS door hardware! Love the combination of the crystal knob with the rectangular brass rosette! Source linked in post!

And it looks just as beautiful on my white doors too – this beautiful pair is on my closet doors across from our rolling baker’s rack:

Beautiful door hardware that's the perfect mix of traditional and modern! Love the crystal knob and brass plate combination!

I’m going to be slowly changing out the door hardware throughout our first floor (which is currently a mishmash of different door knob styles) to this beautiful crystal and brass combination. Couldn’t love it more!

That’s a wrap!! Thanks so much for coming over to the blog to let me show you around!

A truly lovely, relaxing and elegant space – you’ve done a brilliant job! I have to say that I might be on Team Jeff as far as all the banquette cushions go, it does look as though a lot of wriggling and manoeuvring would be required – those of us who are taller than average need all the space we can get! (maybe a handy factotum on hand to get one properly tucked in??).

Ha! Well the good news is that we only eat at this table when it’s our family of four since it doesn’t comfortably seat much more than that. When we have guests, we eat in the dining room so our tall friends don’t have to suffer from my pillow addiction 🙂

As you know, I’ve had my floors for less than a year so I can’t speak to long term durability but I’m VERY happy so far with how they’ve held up. There is literally not a scratch on them! There is a specific cleaner recommended for the particular floors I have so I use that!

I LOVE your kitchen! I am currently in the process of picking new floors for our kitchen (from an ugly tile). We are planning on changing the floors in the kitchen and family room to a light wide-planked wood like yours! The rest of our home is a thinner hard wood (still in good shape- dont need to be change), like the floors in your office and dining room. Did you change the wood throughout your main floor or did you feel like the new kitchen floor mixed in well w the old? We have been having trouble deciding whether it would clash too much to have two different floors. But i love the wide plank!!!
