Six Home Decor Trends to Watch in 2020

Hi everyone! I hope you’ve all enjoyed a nice winter-that-seems-like-spring weekend like we have – I could definitely get used to Januarys in the upper 60’s! As we enter into 2020, I’m excited to be sharing my annual home decor trends post with six decorating trends to look for in 2020! While I’ve never been one to change my decorating style based on what’s trending, it’s always fun to see new styles and ideas emerge that inspire me to think outside the box with my decorating plans.  I’d love to hear what you guys think of these six trends and whether there are any that you’ll be embracing in the new year! (post includes affiliate links – full disclosure statement available {here}).

Sharing six home decorating trends to watch for in 2020!

Trending Paint Colors: Blues & Greens

I LOVE talking paint and am always interested to see what color each of the big paint companies chooses for their color of the year. For 2020, it’s all about the blues and greens, which are also the colors I’m seeing more and more of in furniture and decor pieces. Sherwin-Williams’ color of the year is Naval which is a beautiful, dark rich navy. I think it’s stunning:

Sherwin-Williams Naval is their 2020 color of the year! See what other colors are trending!

PPG’s color of the year is Chinese Porcelain which they describe as a blend of cobalt and moody, ink blue. I’m not so sure I’d paint an entire room this shade of blue, but it’s really pretty as an accent color such as on this door:

Love this shade of blue for a front door! More details on colors of the year are in this post!

Behr’s 2020 color of the year is a soft avocado-y green called Back to Nature. As with Chinese Porcelain, I don’t see myself painting the walls of my home in this shade of green (seems too ’70s flashback for me!) but it could definitely be a pretty option in smaller doses:

Loving the shade of green on this door! More on this and other trending paint colors in the post!

And finally, Benjamin Moore was a bit of an outlier, choosing First Light as their 2020 color of the year, describing it as a neutral that floats between warm and cool:

Benjamin Moore's 2020 color of the year - First LightBlush has definitely been a highly trending color with the 20-somethings and this particular shade is a beautiful one! While Benjamin Moore went with blush for their color of the year, they create a complete 2020 color trends palette that you can see {here} which includes several shades of the trending blues and greens too.

    Rattan & Caned Furniture

I’ve always loved rattan and caned furniture so I’m in heaven seeing all of the gorgeous new woven pieces that have been coming out in the past few months!  When you decorate with a lot of neutrals like I do, integrating textured pieces like these is one of the best ways to add dimension and interest to a room. One of my favorite new pieces is {this round woven coffee table} with a glass top:

So in love with this round woven coffee table! Great post on decorating trends in 2020!

So pretty! These are some other favorite woven pieces that I also love (Scroll & Click/Tap to Shop):

And it’s not only a trend in furniture – there are a lot of beautiful new woven accessories out there too like {this set of 8 woven baskets} for wall art:

A favorite decorating trend of 2020 is woven home decor like rattan and cane furniture & accessories!

as well as {this smaller set of 4}. These rattan accessories are great finds too:

    Channeled & Upholstered Panel Beds

One of the biggest trends in bedroom furniture is channel tufted beds which have a more modern feel than traditional upholstered beds. One of my favorite examples is {this channeled bed} that comes in multiple fabric options and colors and also includes a footboard – what do you think?

Gorgeous channeled headboard and footboard - definitely a trending bed design for 2020!

Most channeled beds have vertical tufting but there are horizontal tufting options too like {this Lila bed} from McGee & Co. – I feel like the horizontal tufting has a more traditional feel that appeals to me:

Love this channeled bed! One of my favorite 2020 decorating trends!

These are just a few of the other available channeled headboard and bed options:

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Another bed & headboard trend? Headboards made of large upholstered panels spanning well beyond the normal wall space of a typical headboard. This Sorrento Upholstered Bed by Pottery Barn (found {here}) is a good example:

Upholstered panel beds are definitely on trend for 2020! Other decorating trends are in the post once you click through!

I’m not so sure I can get on board with one… what do you guys think?

Home Theaters & High-End Coffee Stations

Pinterest tracks trending search terms on their platform and then publishes the top 100 trends to watch for in the upcoming year. For 2020, there is a huge trend toward creating spaces in your home for those who want to STAY home rather than go out to the movies, Starbucks, etc. The trends include everything from home theaters and audio rooms to high-end coffee stations – while these all used to be reserved for homes of the mega rich, it’s becoming more and more common to find them in middle class homes.

I went down the rabbit hole of high-end coffee stations and had no idea how much these suckers can cost! Williams-Sonoma Home has several espresso & coffee machines such as {this one} that sell for thousands of dollars:

High-end espresso and coffee machines are trending in 2020!

I love, love, love coffee but not sure I could ever love it quite that much! And here I thought I was all fancy with the Nespresso machine I bought last year – ha!

My Nespresso coffee maker is my favorite!!!

    Eco-Friendly Furniture / Sustainable Design

Along with the nationwide movement to reduce waste and adopt more environmentally friendly habits, more and more home decor brands are producing eco-friendly products. This includes bedding options like {this flax linen quilt} that’s one of my long-time favorites. It’s now eco-friendly and sustainably sourced (this is the “Natural” color in our guest room – I also have it in Flagstone (master bedroom) and White (my youngest daughter’s room)):

    Our guest bedroom makeover!

Furniture and accessories are also being made with more sustainable materials such as bamboo and mango wood (I love {these sustainably sourced mango wood shelves!}):

Gorgeous open shelving made with mango wood which is a trending material in 2020!

It’s pretty awesome that it’s becoming easier and easier to be both stylish and sustainable! There’s also an increasing trend to buy second-hand home furnishings. Along with local sources such as Facebook garage/tag sale sites and consignment and thrift stores, there are several online sites that offer a great selection of second-hand goods (some of which are very high end!) such as Etsy, Chairish, and 1stDibs,

    More Color in the Kitchen

I actually mentioned the trend toward more color in the kitchen back in 2018 and it’s a trend that’s we’re still seeing more and more of. Most people aren’t doing their entire kitchen in a non-white color, but instead they’re choosing a colored island or lower cabinets. Any guesses about the #1 color that’s currently trending in kitchens? Yep… blue!

Love this kitchen cabinet color - deep blues are definitely a trending color!

If you’re thinking this color looks familiar, you’re right – it’s another example of Sherwin Williams Naval. Stunning right?!

So tell me what you think! Which trends are you loving the most? Are there other trends you’re seeing that should be added to my list? I think that several of the trends I mentioned in my 2019 trend post are actually still trending up so I’ll be keeping an eye on those too (you can check out my 2019 trends post {here} if you missed it).  Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

As I sit here in the barefoot dreams cardigan you recommended, reading… ? I’m so excited to see the photo of the naval kitchen with the BLACK door/window! This is the exact dilemma I currently have – how to work navy into your decor when you’ve already got black elements! I’ve always been told it was one or the other not both, so this is a great photo to ponder. The master vanity was already slated to be painted navy, just need the weather/temps to cooperate. Love this post!

When we moved into our current house 6 years ago, it was very dark– dark cabinets, dark floors, etc. We knew one of the major renovations would be to the kitchen. To brighten it up, we ended up with mostly white cabinets (there is a wet bar area with driftwood colored cabinets), marble countertops and more windows. But blue is my favorite color and the decorator chose SW Naval as the wall paint. The painters thought we were crazy. I love it! Such a rich deep blue.

      Hi Kris,

Great post! I’ve ordered my new kitchen island cabinet in navy, while the surrounding cabinets are white. So excited to see the final results. Now to find the right countertop!

I painted my walls indigo Navy! The first time I looked …I thought what have I done! continued with the white cabinets…the old fashioned steel cabinets…It looks Fabulous! The one wall I have a bright floral blue wallpaper as my accent wall. I have had so many compliments on it…It was time to get out of the ‘nineties red’…very happy with it! I used blue and white glassware for accent….found a drapery panel with a large navy print on white at Home Goods that a friend then turned it into two valances for my kitchen window. Thank you for your trendy interesting blog! One of my favorites!

      Kris,
Like you, I prefer to use new trends in smaller ways. I’ve recently gone to a blue and white color scheme for my accent pieces and such. Blue is a favorite color for me so this ‘trend’ is an easy one to adapt to. I loved the horizontal channeled bed, but I think I like the simple upholstered beds the best.
This was a fun post and I’ve read several bloggers that have given us new ideas to think about.
      xo,
      Karen

We have a Jura coffee machine (not as fancy as the one featured here though) and it is WORTH EVERY PENNY! We’ve had it for around 8 years and my husband and I each drink 2 cups of coffee a day. The coffee is amazing and there is NO WASTE. Even the grounds go on our lawn. The cost over time, quality and environmental benefits (no plastic capsules) makes this a worthwhile investment for us!

Love seeing what’s up and coming. Thanks for sharing. As for the coffee machines, after a trip to Italy a couple of years ago I vowed to save enough for a really good espresso machine. I purchased a Jura and I have used it every day since. Expensive, yes, but I wouldn’t trade mine for anything. After almost 3 years, it is still a treat every morning to have a delicious cappuccino to start my day 🙂

Thanks for sharing the new trends. I have been noticing the blues coming back and I’m so excited. Darker blues have always been my go to for accessories and the Naval blue is awesome. Love all the rattan and wicker pieces too. Have never heard of mango wood but I really like it against the white subway tiles. Would be great in the bathroom.
At this point I’m not loving the channel beds either. Horizontal is better than the vertical but neither happening here.

      Kris,
Thanks for all the info for 2020. I love the blue-Navy is hard to beat anytime. It’s such a neutral color and you can use about anything with it. I love the bedding you have. Thanks for all your hard work for 2019. You really inspire people to go out of their box and try new ideas. Keep up the good work and thanks for everything you do.

Two years ago when I moved into my home, I decided I had lots of updates to make but replacing all the doors seemed a waste of money as they worked just fine.
My hallway has 6 doors including a bathroom and linen closet.
The walls were freshly painted white and I decided to paint all of the doors a nice peacock blue which I absolutely love.
This is a 50 year old rancher with stained wooden doors so that punch of color made the hallway not resemble a bowling alley so much. I also painted my upper kitchen cabinets white and my lower ones SW Meander Blue. For once in my life I am not years behind a color trend:)
I think painting a door or a bathroom vanity is a risk free project as it won’t take long to repaint it if the color is not right for you or you tire of it. I have never seen a shade of blue I didn’t love!
