Thinking about adding a jute rug to your home? I’m sharing some great jute rug options along with answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about them!
Following the chaos of our bathroom addition (the amount of construction dust that had migrated into our bedroom was seriously unreal!), it was time to get our dustbowl of a master bedroom back into shape. A new bedroom rug was part of my mini-makeover since the old one was already looking a little ragged after years of use and then really ragged by the time the addition was wrapping up since the guys working on our bathroom had to walk across it to get to and from that space each day.
I chose a gorgeous jute rug and not only do I have that rug to share with you but through my partnership with Rugs.com they generously sent me smaller sizes of some other favorite rug options to share too! Plus, I’m answering the two questions about jute rugs that I get time and time again. Ready to jump in? (post includes affiliate links – full disclosure statement available {here})
Let’s kick things off with the three jute rugs that I decided between – do you think you can guess which one I went with? They are…
1. White Framed Jute Rug
If you’re all about simple style like I am, this white framed jute rug found at Rugs.com {here} is perfect! It’s an especially good choice if you already have a lot of pattern going on in your room but want something a little more stylish than a plain jute rug:
2. Patterned Square Jute Rug
This patterned square jute rug found {here} is the most highly patterned of the three – it’s a great choice if you want to add a pattern to your room that will work with any colors you already have in your space:
3. Braided Diamond Jute Rug
This diamond jute rug found {here} is the Goldilocks of jutes with not too much but not too little pattern. It would look great in pretty much any space you put it:
It also comes in black & white and gray & white options that are beautiful too!
I usually find online rug shopping to be such a headache because you have to wade through tons of rugs that aren’t your style to find the few you like but I LOVED using Rugs.com Visual Search {here} – trust me and try it! You can narrow down your selections by things like Color, Size, and Price at the top like other websites but what’s unique is that you can then simply click on the photo of the rug that’s most your style and then it will show you pics of other similar ones. You can keep clicking until you get to a page of images that are all the style that you’re looking for – so, so helpful (and actually pretty fun too)!
Also Rugs.com has free shipping and free returns which is amazing since it makes rug purchases risk free.
So which rug did I choose?? I went with {this beauty}:
The rug I previously had in our bedroom was a solid color and I decided I wanted to mix things up a bit by bringing in some pattern. I’m so, so happy with my choice and just love what it adds to my space! It looks great with my gray and white print duvet – I love the contrast in colors and textures:
My rug is an 8 x 10 with the 10 foot size running in the same direction as the headboard. With our two smaller nightstands, it’s the perfect size for fitting the front legs of both nightstands on top of the rug:
and having room for twin benches at the end of the bed:
I’ve used jute rugs for years so am always getting questions about them so thought I’d share answers to the two most common questions I get…
Are Jute Rugs Soft?
It’s going to differ a bit from rug to rug but overall, jute rugs are comfortable on your feet (they’re not scratchy like some sisals) but they’re not plush like a thick piled rug. I’ve used jute rugs in our entryway, home office, and bedroom and have always been happy with them, feeling like they were soft enough with bare feet. But I might choose a different type of rug in a space where you’re doing a lot of hanging out on the floor like a kids playroom or even a family room.
For spaces where you want a rug that’s super plush and soft (it’s legitimately the softest rug I’ve ever walked on), {this Moroccan shag rug} from Rugs.com is amazing – just ask Hope!
And if you’re looking for a rug that’s soft but low pile, {this gray patterned rug} from Rugs.com is a great choice:
It’s made of synthetic material so if you want something that’s highly cleanable (like if you have pets that have accidents) it’s a winner.
Do Jute Rugs Shed?
Jute rugs shed like other rugs do but in a different way. For example, when I first put our previous bedroom rug (which wasn’t jute) in our space, it shed white fibers all over the room for the first few months so I was getting the vacuum out constantly. With jute rugs, it’s not wispy fibers that get all over the room – it’s more debris that sheds underneath the rug so when you lift it up, you’ll see it. Because of this, with jute rugs I’m more diligent about vacuuming under the edges than I am with other types of rugs.
I’ve had jute rugs that shed quite a bit of debris (once I called the seller to return it because it was shedding so much crap I was convinced it was a used rug!) and others that don’t shed much at all. None of the three jutes I tried in my bedroom seem to be big shedders. This may or may not hold true, but it seems to me like most of the jute rugs with some white in them (like all 3 I tried) don’t tend to shed as much as some solid colored jute rugs.
Other Jute Rugs Pros & Cons..
One of the biggest pros of jute rugs is that they’re neutral so you can change up your bedding, furniture, and pretty much anything else in your space but your jute rug will still “go” with everything. Right now I’ve got mostly gray and white in my bedroom but if I decide to change to using different colors or want to use my patterned jute rug in another room in the future it will be no problem – it’s not something I’ll have to worry about decorating around!
I love the look of them and also love that they’re usually a medium thickness – thick enough so that they provide some cushioning but not so thick that they don’t fit under doors or cause furniture that’s half on/half off the rug like my nightstands to be wobbly:
I also love that they’re amazing for layering – having a large jute rug that covers most of the room covered by a smaller patterned rug is a beautiful look! They also add warmth and texture to a room which makes spaces more interesting and welcoming.
As far as other cons, the only other con I can think of is that jute rugs that don’t have bound edges tend to have a lot of flexibility and “give” so that the edges of the rug aren’t completely straight when you first roll it out. But what I’ve found is that if you take some time and go along the edges and push and pull the fibers at the edges you can create a pretty straight edge if that’s important to you:
So what do you think? Any other jute rug questions? Here are easy links to the five jute rugs I shared if you want to check on sizing or get more details on any of them (scroll & click/tap image):
And these are some other Rugs.com rugs that I think would make great additions to my home or yours:
You may have noticed that I swapped out a few other things (drapes, nightstands, & lamps) to freshen up our space – I’ll be sharing details on that soon but you can see my updated sources for our master bedroom {here} if you can’t wait.
XO,
Hi – I’m interested in knowing where you purchased the twin benches you’ve placed at the end of your bed. Thanks!! Lyn
Hi Lyn! Sure – my benches and all of my other bedroom sources are linked here: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/master-bedroom-sources/
Beautiful mini-makeover! Are you considering a landscape piece of restful artwork (abstract?) over the headboard?
For rugs, I’m partial to diamond sisal area rugs from Starck that can be custom cut and bound for about the same price as Pottery Barn (if you can believe it). I have sisal rugs in my dining room and living room.
Hope your NC project is going well!
Hi Elizabeth! Yes, I’m still trying to find the perfect piece for over the bed – our old headboard was so tall that we didn’t really need anything there but we do with this one!
hi Kris!
I love your post. I am updating my daughters room for her 6th bday and we are need of a white/cream kid friendly/easy maintenance 8 X10 rug. Any suggestions? Her room will be painted Chantilly lace.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
Did you see this lattice rug in cream? It would be a really easy one to clean: https://rugs.com/ivory-8×11-lattice-frieze-area-rug-6293006 You could also do a simple shag rug in a cleanable material such as this one: https://rugs.com/white-8×11-soft-solid-shag-area-rug-6301604 Hope that helps!
So pretty and what a huge impact it has on the entire room. Great job.
Karen
Thank you Karen! XOXO
Although your “before” needed some updates and your “after” is very on trend, I hope you didn’t get rid of the adorable bed. (Ballards?) That bed on shiplap? Too cute.
The Ballard headboard is super cute but we did get rid of it after having had it several years! I wanted to switch to having a complete bed without a bedskirt and something upholstered that’s soft to lean on (I read in bed every night 🙂 )
I have been trying to decide on a new rug for our living room for over a year. I love the white framed jut rug. Could I layer a patterned rug on top; i.e. a cowhide or zebra print. Currently we don’t have much pattern in the room at all. I would appreciate your opinion; I have no natural decorating skills.
Yes I actually love the look of a patterned rug on top of a jute rug! That’s what I have in my home office that you can see here: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/house-tour-home-office/
I love the look, durability and simplicity of jute rugs but one con worth mentioning is that they cannot be cleaned. I don’t have any pets but was dog sitting for a friend. That sweet little pouch left a large pee stain on our jute rug. I did all kinds of research for cleaning it to no avail. Typically, they are inexpensive enough that you could replace them but mine is 11’ x 15”, so not that cheap.
I love the bed spread with the tassels. Where did you get it?
