French Mattress Cushions: Everything You Need to Know!

If you’ve ever spotted a thick, beautifully tufted cushion on a window seat or daybed and wondered where to find one, chances are it was a French mattress cushion! With their plush design, rolled edges, and charming details, they’re one of my favorite ways to make a cozy seating spot feel extra special.

I fell in love with French mattress cushions years ago when I spotted this gorgeous window seat designed by Lauren Liess for the 2011 DC Design House:

Pretty amazing, right?! I loved everything about this space, but those thick, tufted cushions completely stole the show!

When we moved into our previous home and I saw the large bay window seat in our living room, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. Today I’m sharing how it turned out, along with everything I’ve learned about French mattress cushions, including where to buy them and what to know before ordering! What Is a French Mattress Cushion?

A French mattress cushion is a thick, upholstered cushion inspired by traditional French mattresses. What sets it apart from a standard cushion is its distinctive rolled edges, hand-tufted appearance, and plush, slightly rounded shape.

Instead of the crisp, tailored edges of a typical box cushion, French mattress cushions have a softer, more relaxed look. Their tufting is usually created with stitching rather than visible buttons, giving them that charming, old-world feel.

They’re also typically thicker than standard seat cushions, which makes them especially inviting for lounging!

While French mattress cushions are probably most popular for window seats, they’re also beautiful on:

• Daybeds
• Built-in benches
• Breakfast nook seating
• Reading nooks

I especially love the way they add softness and texture to spaces with lots of straight lines and hard surfaces. They’re one of those little design details that can make an entire space feel more custom.

Our French Mattress Window Seat Makeover

One of the features that sold me on our previous home was the large bay window seat in the living room. I immediately pictured it piled with pillows and a cozy throw, just waiting for someone to curl up with a good book.

Unfortunately, the thin cushion that came with the house wasn’t exactly the look I had in mind! Here’s how the window seat looked when we moved in:

What a difference, right?!

The thicker cushion made such a difference! I loved how the tufting and rounded edges softened the look of the window seat and made it feel so much more inviting. It became one of the most-used spots in our home!

It was especially pretty when the huge rhododendron outside the window was in bloom, but I loved the view in winter too:

And I can’t share photos of this window seat without mentioning our sweet Boston terrier, Hope. She absolutely loved having a bird’s-eye view of everything happening outside and would beg to come up whenever someone sat down. I sure miss that sweet face!

Where Can You Buy French Mattress Cushions?

Finding a French mattress cushion turned out to be a little more challenging than I expected! Unlike standard bench cushions, they’re not something you’ll find at every upholstery shop or home decor store.

The good news is that there are several options, from ready-made cushions to completely custom designs. The best choice depends on the size you need, your budget, and how particular you are about the fabric and finished look.

1. Have a French Mattress Cushion Custom Made

If you’re working with a built-in window seat or bench that has unusual dimensions, a custom cushion is probably your best option. That’s the route I ended up taking.

When I first started looking, I contacted Charles H. Beckley, a New York company known for its custom mattresses and traditional craftsmanship. They shared this beautiful example of their work:

Their traditional construction and hand-rolled edges were exactly what I was envisioning. Unfortunately, the quote was over $2,500 before fabric, which was more than I wanted to spend.

Next, I contacted several local upholstery shops, but surprisingly, many weren’t even familiar with French mattress cushions! I also received a quote from Calico Corners for over $1,000, not including fabric.

I finally found a local cushion maker through a fabric shop. She’d never made a French mattress cushion before but was willing to give it a try, and she did a fabulous job! To save money, she reused the foam from our existing cushion and wrapped it in two layers of Dacron batting to give it a fuller, softer look.

Tip: If you’re having a cushion custom made, don’t limit your search to traditional upholsterers. Local fabric stores, workrooms, and independent cushion makers are all worth contacting. Bring plenty of inspiration photos so they can see the exact look you’re hoping to achieve.

2. Order a Custom French Mattress Cushion on Etsy

Etsy is another great place to look, especially if you want a custom-sized cushion without having to track down someone locally.

I found several Etsy shops, including {this shop} and {this shop}, that make both traditional bench cushions and French mattress-style cushions. Both have thousands of positive reviews, making them great places to start your search. Also check out {this UK-based Etsy shop} that makes French mattress cushions in the prettiest prints:

When comparing Etsy sellers, be sure to look closely at their photos. Some cushions have more pronounced rolled edges and tufting than others, and those little details can make a big difference in the finished look.

I’d also ask about fabric options, cushion thickness, filling materials, and whether the cover is removable before placing an order.

3. Buy a Ready-Made French Mattress Cushion

If you’re lucky enough to have a window seat, bench, or daybed that fits a standard cushion size, buying ready-made can save you both time and money! What to Know Before Ordering a French Mattress Cushion

Whether you’re ordering a custom cushion or buying one ready-made, there are a few things I’d pay special attention to.

Cushion thickness: One of the things that makes French mattress cushions so beautiful is their substantial, plush appearance. But remember that a thicker cushion will raise the finished seat height. Be sure to account for that when measuring, especially if you’re working with a built-in window seat.

Fabric choice: I love the look of linen and other textured fabrics for French mattress cushions. They complement the relaxed style beautifully! For a seat that gets lots of use, though, I’d prioritize a durable upholstery fabric that’s easy to maintain.

Tufting and edge details: Not all French mattress cushions are made the same way. Some have deeply defined tufting and prominent rolled edges, while others have a more subtle, streamlined appearance. Look closely at the details before ordering.

Cushion construction: Traditional French mattresses use layers of filling and hand stitching, while many modern versions use foam wrapped in batting. Both can be beautiful, but they can differ quite a bit in price, feel, and appearance.

Cleaning: Unlike many standard bench cushions, French mattress cushions often don’t have removable covers. If yours will be in a busy spot where kids, pets, or snacks are involved, be sure to ask about cleaning and care before choosing your fabric!

Are French Mattress Cushions Worth It?

For me, absolutely! Our French mattress cushion was one of those small upgrades that made a surprisingly big difference in how our living room looked and felt. There’s something about the combination of plush tufting, soft edges, and beautiful fabric that makes even a simple bench feel like a special little retreat.

And while a custom French mattress cushion can be an investment, it’s worth comparing different makers and construction methods. As I learned with ours, you don’t necessarily have to spend thousands to get a beautiful result!
