Great design is in the details and one of the little details that can make a huge difference is molding. My sister took on a big home remodel project about a year ago that involved a major renovation of her master bathroom along with some more minor upgrades, including adding new molding throughout her home. I shared her newly upgraded doorway molding on an earlier post but it’s worth sharing again – I just love how it turned out!

My sister was kind enough to share some of the in-progress photos of her doorway molding being done – it’s so cool to see how everything came together. The doorway was originally a simple opening that went up to the ceiling with no molding – just drywall. The first step in working on the doorway was to frame out the new opening (this picture was taken looking from the opposite direction of the final pic BTW).

Then they drywalled it,

and finally the new molding was added:

You may have also noticed that the wimpy crown molding in the room was replaced with a much heftier version. The final result is beautiful!

The design options for doorway molding are endless. A really unique doorway option that I think looks amazing is surrounding it with a custom bookcase:
Of course, doorways don’t have to be white – I LOVE the reclaimed beams framing this doorway:
I’m off to get moving on my mountain sized to-do list for the day. The snow (and then more snow) and a professional development day for our teachers has meant that my girls have had only ONE full day of school in the past eight school days. Craziness! #snowsnowgoaway

I like your door molding, how can I buy this molding for my dining room door?
Kris Jarrett says
If you go to a local lumberyard they should have very similar trim pieces that would allow you to recreate this look!
Terri Uccello says
Hi, love the doorway molding. Any idea where she got it or the brand she used?
Kris Jarrett says
Unfortunately I’m not sure but most bigger hardware stores that sell molding should have similar styles!
Kim says
Love the style of the doorway molding. Curious why they did not do trim to match in the front hall?
Roxanne Corba-Gattuso says
Love it looks beautiful what color are the walls and molding?
Kris Jarrett says
I’m not sure of the color of the molding but the walls are Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter!

Your doorway looks so great, Kris. Thanks for motivating me to renovate my old doorway
Pam @ Simple Details says
It’s beautiful Kris, and very similar to mine in my dining room. Dang, I bet you both wished you lived closer to each other!
Kris @ Driven by Decor says
Thanks Pam – I sure do wish my sister was right next door but being five hours away is sure a lot better than our old distance of ten!

Me too!

Looks so great! Moulding details are one thing that most builders miss big on. Nothing worse than a big room with a puny 3″ baseboard.

So, so true! We redid all of the moldings in our old house and it made a world of difference!

What a difference the doorway molding made in your sister’s house. It adds such a custom detail, so beautiful!
Kris @ Driven by Decor says
I will let her know that you’re crushing on her molding Lisa 🙂

Great inspiration. The first picture has me wanting to paint our transom windows a contrasting color!
Kris @ Driven by Decor says
Can I tell you how jealous I am that you have transom windows? Very.

So happy you shared your sister’s project photos. I am contemplating a bookcase built in project in my living room that will incorporate my daughters piano. I saw a living room by Rebecca Robeson that I am in love with and these photos helped me see how we can do it!
Kris @ Driven by Decor says
That sounds so cool Tammy! Would love to see a picture of it when you’re done!

Such beautiful options! We’re on the first full week of school since before Christmas! I think the kids are going through some sort of withdrawal process going to school for five days in a row!
Kris @ Driven by Decor says
Wow – I’m surprised that your kids have had so much time off of school! You must have gotten more snow being farther north than we used to live – my friend’s kids from Cinci haven’t had many cancellations or delays this year.
Elizabeth @ The Little Black Door says
What a huge difference that makes. So smart of your sister!
Kris @ Driven by Decor says
Thanks Elizabeth – It has totally elevated the look of her home!
