After doing a TON of searching, I’ve gathered together the best inexpensive headboards that don’t look cheap!
A friend of mine is moving into a new apartment that she wants to furnish inexpensively so I’ve been helping source some inexpensive yet stylish finds. Last month I shared my favorite inexpensive living room furniture including inexpensive sofas, media consoles, and coffee tables in {this post} and you guys had lots of love for it so today I’m sharing my favorite inexpensive bedroom furniture including headboards, nightstands, and dressers. Here’s what I came up with (post includes some affiliate links – see my full disclosure statement {here}):
and here’s the more detailed scoop:
Inexpensive Headboards That Don’t Look Cheap
Headboard #1 (available {here}) comes in five color options and is such a beautiful shape. It’s made by Safavieh whose products I’ve had good luck with in the past.
Headboard #2 is a classic cast iron headboard (that unfortunately is no longer available) while headboard #3 is a classic slat headboard (it comes in white along with three other finishes). Both are great choices for bedrooms where you want to your headboard to be a more subdued backdrop so that other aspects of your bedroom design (wallpapered walls, bedding, etc.) can shine! Headboard #3 reminds me of the white headboard in my daughter’s blue & white bedroom (which is a 15+ years old one from Pottery Barn):
Headboard #4 (available {here} and {here}) is the best buy of the bunch at under $150 for a queen with 4 1/2 stars and over 1900 reviews! It comes in several different color options, including this taupey gray:
Headboard #5 is a beautiful tufted wingback at a price you can’t beat and with overwhelmingly positive reviews. In addition to being offered in classic colors like beige and charcoal:
it comes in several colorful options such as navy, violet red, and olive green.
Two other options to throw into the inexpensive headboard category are to (#1) make your own! I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted for my daughter’s bedroom so I made this tall upholstered white headboard and shared the DIY headboard tutorial {here}.
And option #2 is to take an older wood headboard with an interesting shape such as this one:
and give it new life with paint like I did for the headboard in our master bedroom makeover:
And one last piece of advice before moving on to nightstands – whether you’re buying a new headboard or an old one that you’re going to makeover, measure the height of the headboard to make sure that it’s tall enough so that a good amount of headboard is still showing once you have your bed pillows in front of it.
Best Inexpensive Nightstands
When you’re on the hunt for a nightstand, height is super important! I prefer nightstands to be the same height as the top of the mattress or just an inch or two higher. Once you start nightstand shopping you’ll find that many of them are 20″ which is really short considering that the height of most mattresses is about 25-26″ – I’d recommend that you skip those 20-inchers (unless you have an unusually low bed) and keep shopping! I also prefer for nightstands to have a drawer so there’s an easy spot to stash things like hand lotion, tissues, and a book. Here are three I found (all under $175) that fit the bill:
Nightstand #6 is a classic wood nightstand in a hue that will work well with other woods as well as with painted furniture pieces:
Nightstand #7 is a painted campaign-style x-based nightstand that comes in ten different colors (including some really beautiful shades!). Nightstand #8 is the bargain buy of the bunch at only $69.99:
Best Inexpensive Dressers
You guys, finding inexpensive dressers was hard! They are just inherently pricey pieces of furniture due to the labor involved in their construction. The two best priced dressers I found that I like the looks of are both ones with very simple designs – they’d be easy to dress up with new knobs to look more expensive. Dresser #9 is available in four different paint colors and includes a decorative rail that can be added to the top of it in case you’d like to use it in a nursery with a changing pad on top. Dresser #10 is a great inexpensive choice if you need lots of drawer space as is {this more contemporary dresser} that my youngest daughter has in her bedroom:
And just like with headboards, painting a wood nightstand or dresser is a good option to for keeping costs low if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for within your budget. When I made-over our master bedroom, I searched and searched for the perfect sized dresser to replace this one that we already had in the room:
And after striking out on finding one I liked at the right width, I decided to stick with what I have but paint it and add new knobs – I’m SO glad I did because I like it so much better than any other options I had found:
So those are my picks and tips for bedroom furniture! Are there any inexpensive bedroom furniture pieces that you guys own and would recommend? Be sure to tell us all about them!
Hope you all have a great week!
black and white light fixture source?
I got it from Joss & Main but don’t think they carry it anymore. I also found it on Amazon – there’s a direct link to it near the end of my Shop page (www.drivenbydecor/shop)
Kris,
I so appreciate you putting this list together. It made my eyes a little watery. Again, truly thank you so much. I can’t say it enough.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the post Jasmine!
Where can we find a dresser like the one you have? I love the detail on it.
Hi Lisa, I’ve looked but haven’t found anything like it. I got mine from Crate & Barrel but it was about ten years ago!
Love them all, my fave is the #2 but I used#4 for my Basement Guest room!
Do you? I’ll have to pop over to your blog and see if I can find a pic of it!
I am OBSESSED with your painted wood headboard, it is so beautiful. I don’t know how I haven’t seen it on your blog before. I’ve been wanting to do this, but am struggling to find the wooden headboard. would love to know how you found it, estate sale??
Hi Lauren! I found my headboard on Craigslist!!
This is great, Kris. I love the #4 headboard and think it looks as good as some I’ve seen in higher priced headboards. There’s a couple dressers I like too. Thanks for this great source of affordable furniture.
xo,
Karen
Thanks as always for stopping by Karen!! Happy Valentine’s Day!
I love # 3 headboard! You have a nice selection here! I like the nightstands too! My fav is the one with two drawers!
Glad you enjoyed the post Hailey!
Love finding great furniture at affordable prices. Headboard #4 is a favorite but yours is amazing! Can’t believe the difference in a little paint! Happy Wednesday ~
Thanks so much! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!
Do you have any tips for painting over veneer/MDF construction? What sort of paint have you found that adheres well and hold up to the daily demands made on a dresser/nightstand?
Hi Michelle – I don’t think the type of paint matters as much as using a really good primer as your base coat. And you can always add a coat of water-based polyurethane or other protective finish over your paint to protect it from dings and scratches.
Great article! I have often found inexpensive and fun knobs at Hobby Lobby.
Yes! I should have included that in my post – I have too! And they’re a great price!
Where did you get the round mirror above your dresser?
What about recommendations for a tall dresser?
