Using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on Floors

Looking for ideas for using chalk paint on floors? These floors all look amazing thanks to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

I’ve started to think about possibly painting the floor in our dining room and figured that chalk paint might just do the trick because it worked so well on {these Annie Sloan Chalk Paint furniture makeovers. I absolutely loved the “no priming, no sanding needed” nature of this paint! I started doing some searching to see if anyone had used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on floors and found some beautiful inspiration starting with this gorgeous gray floor on Shades of Amber:

Gorgeous chalk paint floor with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

    Shades of Amber

Amber had gotten sick of the old carpet in her store so she and her husband ripped it out and painted the underlying concrete floor with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite. They then added a stenciled pattern in Old White and finished it off with Annie Sloan Lacquer, a water-based varnish for painted floors.  Wow, what a difference! Check out the details of this amazing transformation on Shades of Amber {here}.

Holly of Storywood Designs created a soft checkerboard pattern using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on her foyer floor. She painted her hardwoods with a combination of Paris Grey and Louis Blue alternating with Pure White and then sealed them with Annie Sloan Lacquer. It completely transformed the look and feel of her space:

Love how she used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on her floors in a two color checkerboard pattern!

Jeri painted the floors in her coastal boutique, Shabby Coast Cottage, using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey for the beautiful lattice design. Instead of using a polyurethane or lacquer to seal the paint, she lightly sanded her floors and then waxed them with floor wax, which will allow the floors to age naturally and become distressed over time:

LOVE this gorgeous chalk paint floor with a lattice stencil design!

    Shabby Coast Cottage

Karla at Lady Butterbug had hardwood floors that were a mess of scrapes and water damage. Instead of refinishing them, she painted the floors a soft pink and then did stenciling with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White. She finished it off with two coats of Annie Sloan Floor Lacquer:

Wouldn’t this also be beautiful in a little girl’s nursery?! You can see more of this project on Lady Butterbug {here}.

Another favorite are these pretty floors painted by Shaunna of Perfectly Imperfect as part of the makeover of her daughter’s room.  She was starting from scratch installing new unfinished white pine floor boards so she painted her boards first (smart girl!) and then had then installed so that a subtle stripe pattern was created. She used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White and for the stripe she used the Pure White with some Annie Sloan French Linen mixed in. The floors were then sealed with Annie Sloan Lacquer. They’re gorgeous!

She used chalk paint to create these gorgeous subtle stripe floors!

And finally, I also love the treatment that Rachel of VanHook & Co. did in her kids’ room.  She tore out the old carpet, covered the hardwoods with a wash of chalk paint, distressed the floors, and then coated them with polyurethane. Not only is the result unique and beautiful, but it’s a lot less expensive than refinishing your hardwoods:

Love how she used a chalk paint wash to create this look on her hardwoods!

So what do you think? Would you ever consider painting your floors with chalk paint?

Update! Be sure to check out my latest painted floor project – I painted the tile in our powder room and love how it turned out! Small roller and paint brush are used to apply the paint!

They are all beautiful. The temptation is strong but I think I’ll start with a table that is sorely in need of help. Not sure of where Annie Sloan is offered in my area but I will look for it today. The thought of no priming is very appealing. Thanks for doing the leg work and sharing.

I swear, I was JUST talking about painted floors last week. I’m dying to try it… We’re planning on building a mudroom off of the kitchen, and that just might be the perfect room to try something like that. Great post!

I am so impressed at your really great piece on floors, all of them using my paint. Thank you so very much.
I came up with my paint in 1990 and I am so thrilled that it has been such a huge success in the USA finally! It has been largely to do with blogs like you. xx
Your blog is new to me – I love the title!

I have a large combination living room and dining room and about a month ago we decided to paint the floors. First we rolled on Chateau Grey and then used a faux rag roller to apply a mix of 2 to 1 Old White and Arles. The floor is gorgeous and very durable. Everyone wondered if I’d lost my mind when I told them what we planned but now they all want the same floor in their home.

I have the exact same thing Jennifer – a combination living/dining room and I was sooo close to painting the floors when I redid the room but our floors where in very good shape so I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Almost wish that I had though, especially reading your comment! Glad yours turned out so well!

If you are planning to switch your old flooring with a new one, you should consider painting them, this way you won’t have to spend money to buy new flooring, a lot of people do this and it looks great.

I think it would work because I know AS paint can be used for concrete floors and also for outdoor surfaces. One of the most knowledgeable people about AS chalk paint is the Purple Painted lady – check out this post (http://www.thepurplepaintedlady.com/2013/10/using-chalk-paint-outside/) and maybe even drop her an email to see if she’s done it before!

      Hi,
I’m just about to embark on a new project of painting the floorboards in my sitting room a white colour. It’s an old Georgian house with 200 yr old pitch pine floors. Im hoping to achieve a distressed look as opposed to a pure white finish. The sander is coming to sand them but he’s putting me off painting them white as he says the yellow/brown will seep through from the wood over time. Does this happen with chalk paint? He has never used it before.

Use a coat of French linen (light grey) chalk paint first then paint the white over that. Then the wood color will not seep through. It’s like magic! The reason it seeps through is pure white has no pigment in it.

I’m currently 8 months pregnant and we bought our house in July. I thought I’d wait until baby was here before tackling big jobs. Nope. I couldn’t stand the carpet another day! I looked under the carpet in the hallway to reveal gorgeous hardwood floors. So I excitedly ripped up the carpet. I was tricked! In the living room it is just plywood. So I bought stencils and now I’m trying to decide on my floor colors. Y’all have me sold on the chalk paint though!

I am so thrilled to have found this post! Thank you sooooo much for all the tips on floor painting. I am painting an stenciling my kitchen floors and I am so undecided about whether to use a lacquer over top of them or what. They will get a lot of use and we have two pugs (I’m thinking about their little paws scratching the floors on a daily basis) so I need something good, strong and durable. Would you suggest using lacquer in my case Kris? Would love your advice. Thank you so much for all the information here and great inspirational photos.
      Cheers

Yes, I would definitely top coat it with some type of lacquer or polyurethane so it wears better. Good luck with your project!

I’ve never painted laminate but I’m guessing that you could do it similarly to how I painted my bathroom tile. You can find all of the details on that project here: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/how-painting-bathrooms-ceramic-tile-floors-diy/

Beautiful floors. I need some advice. I painted my stairs with French linen and finished with her lacquer. I realized that coco would look better. Can I paint on top of the lacquer? Do I need to wait some time before the lacquer cures? Do I need to sand? Thank you!!!
