We don’t live near our extended family and we have lots of out-of-town friends that come for visits, so we’re one of those rare families that use our dining room a lot (our kitchen eat-in area is pretty small)! Because of that, the dining room ended up being one of the first rooms we renovated after moving into our home. To say that it was a little bit dated was a bit of an understatement. There was wimpy crown molding and a small chair rail with textured faux finish stripes on the top (and an obviously discolored rectangle from a piece of art that previously hung there) along with heavy, dated drapes on the windows:
I had big plans for that wall so I removed the chair rail, patched the walls in those spots, and then skim coated and sanded the entire room (worst job ever!) to get rid of the texture from the faux finished stripes. Then I painted the walls a tweaked version of Sherwin Williams Keystone Gray (exact formula at the bottom of this post), had new crown molding installed and was finally ready to decorate! We added a new light fixture and already had the drapes, table, and chairs from our old house – they ended up working beautifully in our new space:
Those pics are from my recent summer home tour by the way – you can check out my full tour including a bunch of other rooms in our house {here}!
My favorite feature of the room is the plate wall – for some reason I’ve always wanted to have one and this room had the perfect spot for it! I wrote a whole post about creating my plate wall, including the specifics on how I hung them up – you can find that {here}
I love a slightly eclectic look and one way to get that in a dining room is to mix two different types of chairs – in this case, a pair of upholstered wingback chairs with more casual ladder back chairs – you can get more ideas for how to mix and match your dining room chairs in {this post}.
One of my favorite details of our 60+ year old home is the built-in china cabinet in our dining room. To make our china and crystal stand out and add some warmth, I lined the back wall of our china cabinet with a faux wood Pergo (you can get the details of that DIY project {here}).
Our dining room is one of my favorite spaces to decorate for the holidays and change up for the seasons, such as Easter (you can see more of my Easter table {here}),
spring (see the full spring tour of my dining room {here}),
and Christmas (check out the rest of my 2016 Christmas home tour {here}):
This room as stayed pretty much as-is for the seven years we’ve lived here except for a recent swap-out of our chandelier. Once we renovated our kitchen (you can see that {here}) we removed the doors between the two rooms and I wanted a light fixture that coordinated a bit better. I went with {this wood bead chandelier} and love it!
Thanks for stopping by to tour our dining room! To check out the rest of our work-in-progress house, you can tour the rest of our house {here} and find a complete source list for our dining room room below:
