My design style is always evolving and while I definitely don’t jump from trend to trend, I love seeing the fresh new ideas and styles that are trending along with old ones that are being reinvented in new ways. Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite design trends that I think we’ll be seeing more and more of in 2018 (including some that will likely be creeping into my own home!). I’d love to hear what you guys think and whether any of these trends are ones you’ll be embracing in the new year!

Velvet Everything
Velvet is definitely making a comeback, going from being your “grandmother’s fabric” to something much more stylish and trendy. Instead of traditional red velvet, there are all sorts of fun new color options like the purple, yellow, and orange tones in {these cute tasseled throw pillows}:
And velvets are being used for lots of home accessories other than just pillows – one of my favorite recent velvet finds is this pretty blush velvet table runner found {here}:
And while dark velvet sofas and other furniture pieces have been trending for a little while now, lighter velvet furnishings such as {this blush velvet sofa} are becoming more and more popular (although I think I’d be nervous having one in my dog and kid filled home!):
I’m loving these velvet home decor pieces too:
Soft, Muted Paint Colors
We’ve seen whites, extremely light or dark grays, and charcoal blacks being among the most popular colors for the last several years but color seems to be making a comeback for 2018! Some paint manufacturers are predicting we’ll see more bold, saturated colors such as Benjamin Moore’s Caliente and Pantone’s Ultra Violet which honestly aren’t really up my alley. But there are some several soft, muted colors predicted to trend in 2018 that I LOVE including several in this Sincerity palette by Sherwin Williams (especially Sashay Sand & Acacia Haze – so pretty)!
Dark, Richly Colored Kitchen Cabinets
Dark kitchen cabinets (black, dark blue, and dark green especially) are on the rise and since I’m such a lover of white cabinets, I wouldn’t have expected to like this trend but I actually love it. As I mentioned in {this recent post} about our upcoming kitchen remodel, one of my final contenders for our kitchen island was a dark navy which surprised even me :)! You certainly can’t argue with the beauty of this dark green kitchen designed by Studio McGee (you can see more of it {here}):
Clean Lines & Simpler Design
There’s a definite trend toward living simpler and in the interior design world that means furnishings with clean lines and rooms with simpler, less cluttered designs. I’ve especially seen this trend in bedroom designs – instead of big ruffly euro shams and a bed full of decorative pillows, the trend is toward stacking your bed pillows with standard shams and calling it good – the way {this beautiful Serena & Lily bedding} is arranged is a perfect example:
I love this simpler look and while I’m probably too big of a pillow-aholic to reach this level of minimalism, I’m definitely looking to pare things down in 2018!
Bold Florals
Vintage botanical florals have been reinvented with bold, contemporary colors in everything from chairs to pillows to art to bedding such as {this beautiful duvet & shams} – I love the contrast of the dark floral framing the lighter one on the shams!
These floral furniture and accessories are other current favorites:
Brass + Black
Last year we saw a lot of the brass + marble combo and while brass doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, I’m seeing it paired with black and dark bronze more and more often – I think it’s such a beautiful pairing! I love how the brass + black combo has an updated, contemporary feel while still having a nod to traditional design – {these beautiful sconces} along with the black and brass shelving are a gorgeous example:
as are these I’ve-been-drooling-over-them accessories and lighting:
That wraps up my favorite trends for 2018 – now I’d love to hear what you think! Which trends are you excited about and what are the 2017 trends that you can’t wait to kick to the curb? Dish it!
I love the black and brass combo. It is so classic looking. I had white cabinets, then green, now they are white again. I am working on a library with dark cabinetry. I am still leary of doing it in a kitchen. The older I get the more cautious I am! Loved this post!
Ooohhh.. dark cabinetry in a library would be the perfect place for it – can’t wait to see!
Good morning. i would like to ask you a ‘few things and hope you may help me… Where do you find these beautiful pictures from? I am wanting to re-do my dining room. I am looking for ‘fresh’ ideas. However, I have all my staples, table, chairs, 2 large cabinets. I do not know my decor style..but DO know I do not like farmhouse…distressing and I am NOT a trendy person.. I DO not live in a big house like most of these bloggers do that have tons of room and obviously a ‘bank account’ to do what ever. My house has RED as a constant throughout and I would like a black and white with grey in dining room (and of coarse RED ). My issue is..trying to find some ‘ideas’.. I guess my question is how to use pinterest correctly. I have tried typing in ‘black and white dining room’ – all that comes up are empty room…living rooms….Nothing that helps me. I tried refining my search – nothing better shows up. Any suggestions on how to go about my search for decoration my room? I am DIYing the table…but should it be all black…white…combination… (I have old school Teachers’wooden chairs that are not changing – sentimental reasons). Then 2 upright ‘cabinets’ another DIY..but again…colour? Curtains – colour? So, my question – I do not know how to use pinterest properly, I guess, to find inspiration to answer some of these questions, Even when it comes down to setting the table; way down in the decor process. I am frustrated..to the point of being so upset in tears (paint colour – oh my, don’t even get me started….haha) I am trying to work with what i have….because I HAVE TO – so DIY is the way I must do it. But inspiration I need help with. For another example; I have ‘black dinner plates – so I need to find help with that for my place setting. But nothing I have punched into pinterest has helped me. All my pins are from bloggers., hometalk etc.
SORRY for the ‘long winded’ comment….Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated !!!! AND Thank you in advance….Have a wonderful day.
Hi Laura – there are links to every one of the pictures I share in the post – just click on the highlighted (blush pink colored) links and you’ll get right to the source! As far as Pinterest goes, one of the ways I like to use it best is to find some Pinners whose style you like and go to their specific Pinterest boards and peek around. You’ll probably find more things that are your taste that way. Hope that helps a little! Good luck!
Thank your for your forecast. I do love most of your muted colors except for wheat penny. But that flowery bedroom would drive me crazy. Too much of a “cluttery” feeling. I don’t care for dark cabinets, either. I don’t like to cook and I need a light and cheery kitchen to improve my mood. Again, thank you for sharing.
Katy I have to agree with you on Wheat Penny – can’t really imagine using that one in my home! I also don’t think I could have a kitchen with all dark cabinets but I do love the look of just a dark island. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
I have one velvet pillow on my winter bed, but I don’t think I would buy a velvet chair, sofa or even headboard. With a dog, a messy hubby and eight grandkids, it would be a recipe for stress. I do love those velvet sofas though. ❣️
The floral bedding is a bit too much for me. So..no.
I love, love the dark painted kitchens even the high gloss ones. But, would not do one in my own house as they are too expensive to redo in a couple of years when you are tired of the colour or the trend has passed. So, I’m going to just enjoy this one in pictures.
Thank you for the fun post this morning!
Joanna, doing a big upholstered piece in velvet makes me kinda nervous too – I don’t like to have furniture that I worry about using 🙂 And wow, with eight grandkids, I can see why you’d be worried too! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!
Really enjoyed this post!! I’m finding myself liking cleaner, simpler style lately. I can’t change everything in my home but the small, new things I’m incorporating are nodding that way. I love the velvet, black and brass combo and the dark cabinets-even if in small doses like an island or lower cabinets. Lots of fun ideas!!
Carol, I feel exactly the same as you! I have no plans to change my whole house but bringing in little bits of the newer trends sure is fun! Thanks for stopping by!
Such a fun post Kris! That brass and black combo is just so stunning! It will be really interesting to see the dark kitchen cabinet trend. It had to come after such a swing towards white. Can’t wait to see what you do in your kitchen! xo
Great post! I love velvet & have made pillow covers with it. Also love florals & have many floral prints in my bedroom (first time I’ve been ahead of a trend?).
However, I. HATE. BRASS. Never liked it; never will!
All I can say is…I hope white kitchens never go out of style! I can appreciate the dark green kitchen but don’t think I could live with it!! Maybe pops of color here and there in the white kitchen (as in the island only)… very pretty!
Brenda, I don’t think I’ll ever love anything as much as white either!!
Great post! I have such a fear of “trendy” I love this black and bronze or what I refer to as “gold tone” …We are building a lake home and I LOVE the gold tone hardware/faucets etc with all white kitchens BUT…. I have this thing about gold tone. When we bought a home in 2000 (that was built in 1996) It had brass everything and I spent 15 years changing it all out to nickel tone. LOL! So the thought of going gold tone in our new lake house to have it go “out” next year scares the heck out of me! What are you going with and your thoughts on my “fears” lol!
I don’t think that brass is going anywhere anytime soon! The brasses that are more popular now are the a little more subtle than the ones in the ’80s 🙂
I just completed my kitchen reno….black cabinets, black subway tiles, white quartz counter w/brass accents:-) I love it….now I have to paint the kitchen/living area to match the mood (it never ends)
Wow – that sounds amazing!!!
Where is the GREEN any shade. I liked the dark green cabinets. I have never been a gold lover even in jewelry. I sashay color was ok but I wouldn’t paint it in a room. I did like the flowered bed covers and the blue bed was ok too if you liked blue. My bedroom walls are a soft hint of green and while I might change it sometime it will be another green color! as for velvet I like it.
Green is one of my favorites too for just about everything!!
