Update: Check out my latest home trends post: 2023 home decor trends to watch for
Hi everyone! As we roll into 2022, I’m sharing my 7th annual home decor trends post with eight decorating trends to look for in 2022! I definitely decorate with a more classic vs. trendy style but I love seeing new styles and design ideas emerge that might inspire me to try something new or outside of my comfort zone. If you do too, settle on in to check out the latest trends and let me know whether there are any that may inspire one of your decorating or remodeling projects in the new year! (post includes affiliate links – full disclosure statement available {here}).

1. Green Paint Colors
I LOVE talking paint paint colors and every year I look forward to seeing the paint colors that the leading paint companies choose as their colors of the year. It looks like 2022 is going to be the year of GREEN! Sherwin-Williams’ color of the year is Evergreen Fog (SW 9130) which they describe as “a versatile and calming hue, a chameleon color of gorgeous green-meets-gray, with just a bit of blue. It’s a simple but sophisticated wash of beautiful, organic color”. What do you think of it?

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog
I love how well it works with wood tones and textural elements (both of which I like incorporating into rooms in our home).
Benjamin Moore’s 2022 color of the year is October Mist – they say that “This gently shaded sage quietly anchors a space, while encouraging individual expression through color. Evoking the silver-green stem of a flower, October Mist creates a canvas for other colors – and your imagination – to blossom.”

I do think this color would play nicely with a lot of other colors, making it a great “colored neutral”.
Behr chose (yes, you guessed it!) a green color called Breezeway for their 2022 color. They describe it as “A silvery green shade with cool undertones. The color is inspired by naturally stunning sea glass found on the shore of salty beaches.”

PPG and Glidden also chose greens as their color of the year. PPG opted for Olive Sprig which you can see {here} and Glidden chose Guacamole which you can see {here}.
Pantone went a totally different direction and chose Very Peri which they describe as “a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone”. I can see this color being used in fashion but as a paint color for your home… not so much.
2. Curved Furniture Pieces
I started seeing a lot of curved furniture pieces in 2021 and I think it’s a trend that we’ll see continue to grow in 2022. From chairs such as {these curvy rattan lounge chairs}:
to bedroom furniture such as {this curvy platform bed} and {these nightstands},
and curved sofas, sectionals, dining tables, and console tables such as {this ivory linen console table},
it’s definitely a trend I could get on board with!
3. Hardworking Kitchens & Bathroom Storage
Houzz identified several home design trends that will shape 2022, including a trend toward having built-in features in kitchen and bathroom cabinets that increase their functionality. Organized and super functional cabinets are totally up my alley so I’m loving this trend! In the kitchen, we’ll be seeing more features such as pullouts in the pantry like these in our recent kitchen remodel,
appliance lifts that raise bulky mixers out of cabinets to countertop height, built-in drawer dividers, and designated paper towel roll holder & storage (such as this one we had in our kitchen that held a roll of paper towels for use + several rolls behind it):
Kitchen Sources: Appliances | Cabinet cup pulls | Cabinet pulls | Round braided tray | Marble & wood utensil holder | Gray geometric rug | Floating wood shelves | Sink | Black & white hand towel
In bathrooms, expect to see more elements such as hidden pullouts for laundry hampers, in-drawer outlets for styling tools, and built-in drawer organizers such as found in {this James Martin bathroom vanity}:
Other kitchen trends predicted by Houzz include multiple window banks, a casual collected look, island appliances, long linear backsplash tile, marble-look quartz countertops, heated island countertops (I’d never heard of this one!), and lantern style lighting.
Other bathroom trends include some features we put into our recent bathroom remodel including marble showers, freestanding tubs, and heated floors,
Master Bathroom Sources – Shower: Pump bottles (16 oz white/gold) | Body brush | Sea sponge | Stool | Shelves: Floating shelves | White woven basket (medium) | Gray & white striped planter (holding snake plant) | Colorful moth art print | White wood frame | Glass canister (1 gallon size) | Bath bombs | Belly basket with tassel | Favorite bath towels | Large lidded basket for hamper | Freestanding bathtub | Tub filler | Dipped leg stool
plus some features that we didn’t include such as multiple shower heads and sprays and low curb showers.
4. Upscale Home Bars
With more time spent at home this past year, home owners have started investing in the creation of upscale home bars. It’s a trend I’ll be jumping on this year given that we have this dated bar area off the hallway leading to our kitchen that we plan to renovate soon:
Creating an upscale bar doesn’t mean you have to have a built-in bar space – glamming up a bar cart like {this one} works too:
or you could invest in a bar cabinet which looks just like a regular cabinet on the outside but turns into a epic at-home bar when you open it up. Bar cabinets range in size from small options such as {this white paneled bar cabinet}:
to large-scale cabinets such as {this statement-making black bar cabinet}:
There are actually a TON of stylish bar cabinet options out there right now – these are some of my favorites:
Bar Cabinet Sources: 1. Distressed French white bar cabinet | 2. Black fish scale motif bar cabinet | 3. White paneled bar cabinet | 4. Tall black bar cabinet | 5. Fluted brass leg bar cabinet | 6. Gray drop front bar cabinet | 7. Round cane bar cabinet
5. Biophilic Design
Every year, Pinterest tracks trending search terms on their platform and then publishes the key trends they predict will rise in the upcoming year. For 2022, one of their predicted trends is an interest in biophilic design which involves bringing the outdoors in and creating home environments that make you feel more connected to nature.
Biophilic design can be as simple as filling your home with live plants:
6. Barkitecture
Another trend predicted by Pinterest is “barkitecture” which is their term for animal-first architecture. The younger generations of pet parents are driving this trend to redesign areas of their home with their furry friends in mind. Pinterest saw an increase in searches for terms such as luxury cat room, luxury dog room, and dog beds made with furniture. Expect to see more pet suites and built-in features such as feeding areas, litterboxes, dog wash stations, and pet gates in new construction homes and an increasing selection of luxury pet beds too:
Pet Bed Sources: 1. Wicker dog bed with blue check cushion | 2. Vintage stripe cuddler bed | 3. Cat hammock | 4. Black & natural stripe dog bed | 5. Blue patterned dog sofa | 6. Gray pet sofa with legs | 7. Woven dog bed | 8. Navy & white Riviera dog bed
7. Higher Quality vs. Fast Furniture
Due to a combination of us being at home more often and the trend toward sustainable practices, more people are buying higher quality furniture vs. cheaper “fast” furniture. I’m all about a high/low mix of furniture and home decor and it’s definitely with furniture pieces where I tend to go high. We paid a LOT for the nice, high quality sectional that we bought five years ago for our family room in our last house:
Family Room Sources: Sectional | Grasscloth wallpaper behind shelves (Charcoal) | Landscape art print | Small framed art print | White ginger jar | Star anise pod | Chandelier (satin bronze) | White tasseled pillow cover | Blue linen pillow cover | Green & blue block print pillow cover | Rug | Acrylic coffee table (similar) | Coffee table tray (28″ square) | Black and white striped box (on coffee table) | Brass cricket (on coffee table) | Basket planter | Rattan chair
and I have zero regrets because not only has it held up beautifully but it works perfectly in our new home too and we intend to have it for a long, long time (you can get the details of our sectional in {this post}). I think the cost will end up working out to be close to the same as buying an inexpensive piece that wouldn’t last as long, resulting in having to buy something new sooner.
I’ve definitely bought furniture on the lower end too, mostly because I knew we’d be moving and didn’t know if I’d have the space for a certain piece in a different home. Also, in our younger years it was a budget issue – we simply didn’t have the money to afford anything nicer. I love that Facebook Marketplace and online sites such as sites such as Chairish and eBay make buying and selling used furniture SO much easier than it used to be which means less things going in an landfill.
Also I saw that IKEA started a buy back & resell program in Europe where they’ll buy back used IKEA furniture from you and resell it in order to keep second hand furniture from going to waste. Love that! Hopefully they’ll bring their program to the US soon!
8. Fluted Furnishings
I’m been seeing more and more fluted furniture pieces becoming available – I LOVE this look! {This white fluted dresser} is one beautiful example:
From mirrors to nightstands, side tables, planters and more – it’s definitely a trend that I expect to see more of in 2022:
Furniture Sources: 1. Fluted mirror | 2. Fluted white 3-drawer nightstand | 3. Round fluted side table & Hourglass fluted side table | 4. Fluted bar cabinet | 5. Fluted windowsill planter | 6. Fluted single drawer nightstand | 7. Fluted white dresser
And with that being the last of my trend predictions… what do you think? Are any of these trends once that you see yourself incorporating into your home?

Love it all. Esp the great rattan chairs. So pricey though!

Been in our condo now 3 years. It is open concept and painted latte by SW.
Ok but wouldn’t be my choice. I love greens but to paint our entire living/kitchen/dining area might be too much. Thanks for all the helpful hints.

These home trends are cold and impersonal to me and don’t reveal anything about the occupants. The “I felt some kind of way” brand of emotionally vague, criticism-avoidant self-expression has bled into home decor over the last few years, and I have to say I don’t like it one bit. Love your blog!

BTW, love your sectional and the room it’s in, plus your cute little comfy doggie!

My first thought when choosing wall colors is always: will people look good in this room? The rooms you show for the paint color trends are designed beautifully but I think the wall colors would drain any skin tones of color, whether Black, White, or Asian. Even olive-toned or golden-glow complexions would suffer, I think. That’s a risk you take with any green, but these are especially anti-flattering, if that’s a word. The possible exception is the Behr Breezeway because it has a little more blue. that yellow-green kitchen clashes with the existing Carrara backsplash.

Kris,
Thanks for keeping us in the know. I have been seeing a lot more color green in decor. I had hunter green as our main color when our sons were young. I am now burnt out on any shade of green. That said, both of our sons love green. Haha. This is a great post. So many pretty pieces of furniture..
xo,
Karen
