Our primary bedroom has been a s-l-o-w work in progress since we moved in last August. Over time, we replaced the carpet, painted the tan walls Simply White, swapped out the ceiling fan for a chandelier, and finally found a pair of narrow nightstands to fit the short wall that our bed is on. Last week I checked off the final two items on our bedroom to-do list: hanging new drapery rods & blackout drapes (which was a learning experience since I was dealing with angled walls) and finding the perfect bedroom lamps for our nightstands and next to our reading chair.
So it’s finally time for our bedroom reveal! Ready to see?! (post includes affiliate links; full disclosure statement available {here}).
Throwing it back to right before we moved in, here’s where things started:
and here’s our bedroom today:

It feels lighter and airier, and overall, much more like us! After sharing a sneak peek on Instagram, I got a ton of questions about our curtains so check out my post on how high to hang curtains which answers that questions plus several others, including which curtains and rods I recommend. Today I’m partnering with Circa Lighting to share everything you want to know about our gorgeous new kate spade new york bedroom lamps and give some helpful lamp sizing and style tips to help you choose the best lamps for your own space.
Let’s kick things off with the details on our new kate spade new york bedside lamps:
I’m totally smitten! There are a lot of whites in our bedroom, so I wanted bedside lamps that would add a pop of color to this space. I had unsuccessfully tried several different bedside lamps before finding {these blush Elsie table lamps} that ended up being exactly what our bedroom needed:
I love this shade of blush because it’s vibrant enough to give me that pop of color while staying soft enough that it mixes well with my whites and grays and would also mix well with greens, blues, and most other colors if I ever decide to change up my bedding. And the fact that they’re painted glass gives them a luminous quality that you don’t get with ceramic lamps:
Another win with this lamp is that it’s not very wide but still feels substantial, which is exactly what I needed for our narrow-by-necessity nightstands (the wall that our bed is on is quite short so our nightstands are as wide as we can go!). When I tried out other bedside lamps that were a max of 16″ wide, I found that most of them were either super short or had a very narrow base so finding the Elsie lamp was a score! I love the blush color but it also comes in lilac, cream (with cream or black shade options), blue, and yellow:
If you’re also on the hunt for new bedside lamps, here are a few tips for choosing lamps that are the right size for your space…
How Tall Should Bedside Lamps Be?
The height of your bedroom lamp is important because you don’t want to be looking at the bare bulb of your lamp when sitting in bed reading. Also, lamps that are too tall will typically overpower your bed and ones that are too short will look like they belong on a desk instead of your nightstand. In most cases, a bedroom lamp that measures between 24″- 28″ tall works well on nightstands. If you have a substantial bed with a tall headboard, up to 30″ can work well.
These are some of the gorgeous lamps in kate spade new york’s lighting collection that are the perfect height to use as bedside lamps:

Gray square base lamp | 8. Blue ribbed table lamp | 9. Gloss white & burnished brass lamp | 10. Dotted table lamp | 11. Round rattan lamp | 12. Black & white cylindrical lamp
There’s also a rule of thumb recommending that the widest part of your lamp be about ⅓ the width of your nightstand. Honestly, I think that’s a silly rule unless you have a really large bedroom with wide nightstands. My 16″ wide Elsie lamps look just right on my 18″ wide nightstands (definitely a whole lot better than a 6″ wide lamp would – ha!):
I also tried my Elsie lamps out on my 24″ wide guest room nightstands and they look perfect there too!

Other Features to Consider When Shopping for Bedside Lamps
A few other things to think about when shopping for bedside lamps are:
1. Shade style: The style of your lamp shade definitely affects the overall style of your lamp. I prefer drum shades (the same width at the top as the bottom like my Elsie lamp) and slightly tapered shades. Pleated and bell shaped shades are too traditional for my taste, and highly tapered shades are too modern.
2. Turn switch knob vs. line switch button: One thing you’ll notice about my Elsie lamp is that it not only has a beautiful base, but even the lamp socket has clean, beautiful lines because it has no turn switch knob:
Instead, you turn it on and off with a line switch button on the cord:
I’ve never had bedside lights with a line switch before, so I didn’t know how much I’d love it! It’s now so much easier to turn my lamp on and off from bed vs. reaching for a switch on the lamp socket.
Now let’s talk floor lamps…
Bedroom Floor Lamps
I love that the primary bedroom in our home isn’t so big that it takes away square footage from the rest of the house but big enough that there’s room for the essentials plus a reading chair (if this chair looks familiar, it’s because it came from the guest room of our last home). Adding a small garden stool and {this kate spade new york Monroe floor lamp} helped create the perfect little reading nook:
One of my tried and true tips for mixing metals (I have a mix of black & gold metals in our bedroom) is to sprinkle each metal throughout your room instead of clustering them together on different sides of it. The burnished brass base of my Monroe floor lamp is perfect for bringing the brass from my table lamps and nightstand knobs to the other side of our bedroom. And I LOVE the large drum shade that brings more visual weight to this side of the room.
The Monroe lamp comes with the option of a polished nickel base as well as different color options for the top portion of the lamp including gloss white, blush, coral, gloss black, green, and navy. I considered choosing the blush color to coordinate with my bedside lamps but decided to go with gloss white, which makes it more future proof (which is important when you’re spending the money for a higher end light fixture!).
I’ll be able to use this floor lamp in a living room, home office, or just about any other space if we don’t have a spot for it in our bedroom in a future home.
These are a few of my other favorite kate spade new york floor lamps – there are so many beautiful options!

The kate spade new york lighting line also includes some stunning ceiling lights including chandeliers, pendants, and flush mounts. Layering multiple sources of light (a combination of ceiling, bedside, and floor lamps) in a bedroom is another tip for making your space shine (both literally and figuratively!). These fixtures would all be gorgeous additions to a bedroom or other room in your home:

There are also several beautiful bathroom sconces in the collection including {this sconce} that I sourced for above the vanity in my sister’s powder room. It’s gorgeous (I’ll show you on Instagram Stories next time I’m at her house!) and also comes in single and double light options {here}. You can view all of the other lighting in the kate spade new york collection at Circa Lighting {here}.
As we wrap up, I have one last bedroom lighting tip to share… put overhead lighting on dimmer switches so you can dial the amount of light up or down to set the mood you wish to create. If I had my way, every overhead light in our home would be on a dimmer (I’m about halfway there at this point! 😉).
Now that our bedroom is done (and our family room fireplace too – more on that coming soon!) I can finally turn my attention back to finishing the design plan for my girls’ bathroom and knocking out that remodel in the new year. What kind of projects do you guys have at the top of your to-do lists for 2023?
XO,
