Let’s talk Valentine’s Day. Do you guys go all out? We keep things super simple around our house – no Valentine’s Day mantels or red heart pillows, just some cute and easy ideas to make the day a special one. Today I’m sharing my five favorite simple Valentine’s Day ideas along with my friends Pam of Simple Details, Lisa of Shine Your Light, Jennifer of Dimples & Tangles, and our guest host, Ann of On Sutton Place. I’m so excited to have Ann guest host and could go on and on gushing about her – not only does she have some of the best, most creative ideas out there but she couldn’t be sweeter. One of her ideas I’m definitely swiping for this Valentine’s Day is bundling up these cute heart-shaped cookies in baggies with printable labels – love! You can get both the cookie recipe and the free printable on her blog {here}.
Thanks so much for joining us Ann! Now let’s get going and check out my five favorite simple Valentine’s Day ideas… (post includes some affiliate links – see my full disclosure statement {here})
Twinkly Valentine’s Garland
Sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones that fall into your lap when you’re not looking. This super simple twinkly Valentine’s garland is one of those – my oldest daughter had a strand of twinkle lights along the top of her headboard throughout the holidays and when we took in down a few weeks ago, she missed the sparkle it added to her room (although Hope seemed perfectly ok with it!).

So we decided to put the twinkle light strand back on her bed and figure out something we could dress it up for Valentine’s Day with. A few weeks back I had snagged these cute gold heart paperclips from HomeGoods and they ended up being perfect – we simply clipped several on to the twinkle light strand and now her bed has a cute twinkly Valentine’s Day garland:
Perfect for a teenager who likes a little bit of sparkle but nothing too little kiddish 🙂 (More pics of my daughter’s bedroom and a full source list can be found {here})
Valentine Door Hearts
A few years back, the night before Valentine’s Day my husband and I each wrote out several paper hearts for both of our daughters, telling them some of the many things we love about them and why we love being with them. Not only were they thrilled to see their Valentine’s Day door decorations that morning, but they kept them up on their doors for months. So simple but something that I think made them feel special not only on Valentine’s Day but for months to come.
Homemade Heart Marshmallows (Yum!!!)
Honestly, I’m not much of a marshmallow girl but I tried making homemade marshmallows a few years back because my kids love them and let me tell you, they are amazing! Even this non-marshmallow-loving-girl can’t get enough of them! A quick story about their yumminess – we gave little packages of our homemade marshmallows as Christmas gifts to my oldest daughter’s teachers in middle school and two years later when my youngest daughter had some of those same teachers, during the first week of school several of them mentioned (and politely hinted they’d like more of) these delicious treats again. Yep, they’re that delish and honestly much, much easier to make than you’d expect. You can find the homemade marshmallow recipe I use {here} and the deets on how to make the heart-shaped marshmallows {here}.
And don’t forget the hot chocolate – a perfect combo! 🙂
Valentine’s Day Fondue
Last week I talked about another Valentine’s Day tradition around our house – an at-home fondue feast! While this might seem all fancy, trust me that the meal prep time is much less than a typical meal – so simple! I’m not going to rehash the details since most of you read my recent post but for those of you who missed it, you can hop over to to my Valentine’s table {here} for more pics, my three-ingredient, three-minute chocolate fondue recipe (delish!) and a full source list for my tablescape.
Chalk Pen Mirror “Art”
Have you guys ever used chalk pens? Strangely enough they aren’t great for writing on most chalkboards (they don’t erase well) but they work beautifully on glass and mirrors and wipe right off with just a little water. A cute and simple way to use them for Valentine’s day is to draw “we heart you” on a mirror that your kids (or grandkids) will be looking into on Valentine’s Day morning. In the past, we’ve done it on my girls’ bathroom mirrors but this mirror (available {here} and {here}) that they see right when they come down the stairs in the morning works great too!
I used {this white chalk pen} because I already had it on hand but they come in about 20 different colors so you could do the same thing in red or pink to make it even more festive!
That’s it for me! Now it’s time hop over and check out my friends’ five Valentine’s Day favorites – they’re sure to have some good stuff to share:
Ann – On Sutton Place
Pam – Simple Details
Jennifer – Dimples & Tangles
Lisa – Shine Your Light
And if you missed any of my past posts from our My Five Favorites series, you can catch up here with my five favorite:
Hope you all have a great day!!
XO,
Such cute ideas Kris, what a happy house for your girls to grow up in. Love the hearts on their doors and the chalk marker for writing sweet nothings!
Thanks Lisa! XOXO
Thanks so much for letting me tag along this month for your Five Favorites party…I am having a blast! Everyone’s posts are so beautiful. I’m happy to be included. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Ann it was so great to have you – thank you for joining us!!
Kris,
I love these ideas. Twinkle lights are a favorite of mine and I’m always looking for a way to use them throughout the year — without looking like I forgot to take down the Christmas lights! 🙂
Our kids are grown but your idea of having you and your husband write your girls Valentine’s notes and place them on the door. So sweet. I still love the table set up for the fondue party!
xo,
Karen
Thank you so much Karen! I hadn’t ever used battery operated twinkle lights until this past Christmas but I think I’m hooked!!!
I just love every single one of these ideas, Kris!!! Your fondue table is so pretty!
Thank you so much MaryAnn!!
Such fun ideas, I’m all about easy for Valentine’s Day and these are perfect! We all had mailboxes and did notes for each other when my guy was younger – I’ve saved them all. 🙂 I should do it again, I’m sure my 18 year old would give us a good laugh with his notes now!
How sweet is that mailbox idea!! Tell him that you’re going to do it again this year (and tape his expression – should be priceless!) – ha!
Lovely ideas! The valentine door hearts inspired me. I will copy it! Thank you for such a practical ideas!
So glad you liked them Hailey! Hope you have a great Valentine’s Day!
Such cute ideas! I LOVE Valentine’s Day so I decorate a bit more, but still pretty simple. Before we moved we used to have a Valentine party every year so I have lots of decor around still but I try to keep it simple. I love the idea of decorating a door with love notes, that’s just the sweetest!
Having a party is the best motivation for doing some serious holiday decorating!
The fondue dinner sounds SO fun, I need a set! And, I’m borrowing the door idea too… so sweet!
Thanks Jennifer – we really enjoy your fondue dinners! They’re honestly easier than cooking a real dinner and so delish!
Can I ask where I could purchase this mirror?
It seems to be out of stock everywhere right now but I linked to two sources in my blog post – I would just keep checking back!
