My favorite way to add both style and extra storage space is by decorating with baskets. They come in a variety of interesting shapes and add texture and warmth to rooms where they’re used. Today I’m sharing ten tips and ideas for decorating with baskets to get your wheels turning on ways to use them in your home! (post includes commissionable links; for more information, see my disclosure statement {here})
1. Store Supplies on Shelves
{These square seagrass baskets}) that come in two sizes are great for keeping clutter out of sight! They’re the perfect choice for storage on shelves like in this home office:
Another great option is {these small milk crate seagrass baskets} that worked beautifully for organizing the cleaning products in our storage closet:
I attached {these mini chalkboard labels} that I wrote on with {this chalk pen} to the front of each basket with a glue gun to make it easy to see and grab anything I need.
Baskets can add storage on bathroom shelves too by filling them with extra toilet paper or towels:
2. Extra Nightstand Storage
A lot of nightstands have small drawers that don’t provide much storage space. Adding a basket like {this square seagrass basket} to the bottom shelf of a nightstand gives you storage space for books, journals, and other items that your drawer is too small to hold:
3. Storage of Craft & Gift Wrapping Supplies
I love {these folding square woven baskets} because they fold completely flat for easy storage when not in use. I have a pair of them holding ribbon as part of my gift wrapping station:
4. Shoe Storage
If you have a pile of shoes by the door where everyone enters your home, corral them with a basket! It’s one of my most-used ideas for decorating with baskets! {This braided handle basket} is the perfect size for holding several pairs of shoes and looks beautiful doing it too:
See my post on entryway shoe storage ideas for several other shoe storage solutions.
5. Storage Under a Console
I’m a sucker for baskets with braided handles such as {these beachcomber handled baskets}. They’re perfect for storage under an open console:
Other baskets that are the perfect size for storage under a console are {these Beachcomber console baskets} that are tall enough to fill up the space under a console but shallow enough that they can be tucked away:
I actually use a pair of these baskets on the floor in our storage closet – they’re perfect for storing extra paper grocery and shopping bags:
6. Firewood Storage
Handled seagrass baskets work wonderfully next to the fireplace for storing firewood – I’ve used {this basket} next to mine:
Just be sure to keep it far enough away from your fireplace opening that it’s not in danger of being set on fire!
7. “Planters” for Faux Plants & Trees
Another way to start decorating with baskets is to use them as stylish planters for faux plants such this faux fiddle leaf fig tree in our family room:
Sources: {TV console} (similar) | Chandelier (satin bronze) | Patterned gray pillow covers | Faux fiddle leaf fig tree | Rug | Art prints | Acrylic coffee table (similar) | Coffee table tray (28″ square) | Gray plaid throw (similar) | Rattan chair
They can also be used with live plants if you slip a planter or bowl inside of your basket.
8. Magazine Holder
{This curved seagrass storage basket with handles} is the perfect basket for stashing magazines in a living room or family room:
9. Laundry Hampers
I also love decorative baskets with lids – my favorite is {this basket} that I have in the medium size in my daughter’s room to use as a laundry basket:
and in the large size in our primary bathroom (see my post on master bathroom remodel ideas for more bathroom decorating tips!):
Shelf sources (from top to bottom): White woven basket (medium) | Kumquat tree – no longer available | Gray & white striped planter (holding snake plant) | Colorful moth art print | Glass canister (1 gallon size) | Bath bombs | Belly basket (similar) | Favorite bath towels
If you’re on the hunt for a woven basket to use as a hamper, also check my post on laundry hampers with lids for lots of gorgeous options!
10. Toy Storage
{These zig zag baskets} that come in multiple sizes are long time favorites. They’re great for stylish storage of things like extra throws or toys:
I use a similar basket to hold Cricket’s dog toys. 🙂
