As the weather turns cooler, it’s time to bring out the cozy sweaters, fall boots, warm soups, and, of course, the fall decor. Today I’m sharing 12 of my favorite fall decor ideas to help you welcome in the season. From getting creative with lantern fillers to mixing in more than mums to your front porch decorating, making fall luxe with velvets, and more. Let’s get to it… (post includes affiliate links; full disclosure statement available {here})
1. Get Creative With Lantern Fillers
I love incorporating lanterns into my fall decor, both inside and out. Lanterns look beautiful filled with pillar candles ({these waterproof outdoor-friendly battery operated pillars} are my favorite) but I also love to get creative by filling lanterns with seasonal finds.
One of my favorite fall lantern fillers is white baby boo pumpkins. For several years, I’ve used them to fill {this set of 3 lanterns} and love the look:

I used real pumpkins but you could also buy faux baby boos like {these} to reuse year after year.
Another fun idea is to fill them with candy corns as was done in the smallest of {these indoor/outdoor lanterns}:

Candy corn obviously wouldn’t fare well outside through heat and rain but it would be a fun filler for indoor lanterns or for use outside during a special event such as a party or Halloween. Other fall fillers to try are battery operated string lights, pinecones, or spooky fillers like mini skulls for Halloween.
2. Mix It Up With More Than Just Mums
Mums and pumpkins are front porch staples this time of year but it’s fun to bring other plants into the mix too! One of my favorites to add to the mix is cabbages:

I especially love the large cabbages that have a beautiful purple center:

Check out my post on fall front porch ideas for more ideas and links to all sources.
Another favorite of mine is crotons that have all of the traditional vibrant colors of fall (Home Depot usually has a great selection of them this time of year):

3. Welcome Fall With a New Wreath
The vibrant red, yellow, and orange colors of fall make the prettiest wreaths! One of my all time favorite front door wreaths is {this gorgeous wreath} with white pumpkins, berries, pinecones, and colorful mums and hydrangeas:

If you prefer a fall wreath that will transition beautifully into the holidays, a magnolia wreath like {this wreath} is a great choice. You can hang it from a pretty plaid ribbon with the colors of fall right now and then swap it out to a holiday ribbon and add bells like {these favorites} for the holidays.
4. Layer Your Doormats
Just as a love the look of layered rugs in a room, I’m crushing on the look of layered doormats too – it’s one of my favorite fall decor ideas! It’s an especially great look for porches that are on the larger size or that have double front doors where a doormat alone often looks too small. These are a few layered doormat combinations that are perfect for fall:

5. Bring The Outside In
Mother Nature does a better job decorating for fall than we ever could so why not bring some of the outdoor beauty of fall indoors?! One example is using a vase full of fall branches to decorate your table:

Or if you have pretty fall flowers growing in your yard, get out your clippers and snip some to put in a vase in a spot that you’ll enjoy them. In our previous home we had these huge hydrangea trees with hydrangeas that started out white but turned to these pretty fall shades as the weather got colder:

Pinecones are another thing you can collect in your yard and enjoy as indoor fall decor. It can be as simple as placing several pinecones in something such as {this black footed bowl} on your coffee table:

6. Go Earthy
Your fall decor doesn’t have to all be about color – neutral home decor in earthy tones can be gorgeous too! Examples include terracotta planters & bowls, wheat bundles, neutral fall florals,

and wood bead garlands. Also try incorporating warm woods (see my post on driftwood decor ideas for more inspo!),

or {this simple wood knot} as a coffee table book topper:

7. Cozy Up In Plush Throws
I’m a huge lover of throw blankets and cozy up in them on the couch regardless of the season, but fall is when I put my lightweight throws away and bring out the ones that are super soft, cozy, & plush. I bought {this plush faux fur ruched throw} in the ivory color about five years ago and it remains my favorite (and was sweet Hope’s favorite too!):

{This ruched throw} that comes with two matching pillow covers is another options with a similar look and feel but more budget-friendly price tag.
8. Make Fall Luxe With Velvets
Another cozy favorite for fall is velvet. Whether it’s velvet ribbon, pillow covers, or other accessories, velvets make a space not only more cozy but also more luxe. Swapping out a couple of summer pillow covers on your sofa for fall velvets such as {these gorgeous velvet pillow covers} (I love the linen flange on them!):

is a simple change that can instantly transform the feel of your room. It’s definitely one of my favorite fall decor ideas!
Another way to bring the luxe of velvet into your home for fall is by decorating with a few of {these velvet pumpkins} that come in the prettiest fall colors:

Or it can be as simple as typing a velvet ribbon around your silverware like I did for this special fall dinner:

9. Go Faux With Flowers That Last All Fall
I love having live fall flowers in our home when I can but I also always have a few arrangements of no-maintenance faux fall florals. One that I use year after year is this arrangement of faux white peonies with a few fall hued dahlias in {this gray striped planter}:

They sit with our cereal bowls and honey pot on {this round beaded tray}. I also love to add faux fall florals to {this bust planter} every year:

Another simple fall arrangement is using faux fall wildflowers in a fluted pitcher:

10. Layer Your Bed in Cozy Linens
I always get my best sleep in the fall and winter when it’s cold outside but I’m sleeping under layers of cozy linens! When it’s really cold outside, I take my favorite faux fur throw to bed with me and layer it on top of our quilt, duvet, & blanket as they did on this cozy layered bed:

11. Swap Out Your Salad Plates
If you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner or having a few friends and family over to eat, a simple way to add new life to your existing dinnerware set is to swap out the salad plates. It’s one of my favorite fall decor ideas!
For example, adding {these harvest bird plates} to neutral colored dinnerware transforms the look of this table into one fitting of a fall feast!

Or if you’re having soup instead of salad, switching up your soup bowls to special bowls such {these darling lidded pumpkin bowls} is another simple way to create a festive table for fall dining:

You could also create bowls out of real pumpkins as was done for this squash soup recipe.
12. Create a Simple Fruit Centerpiece
A bowl of fruit can be the perfect simple but beautiful fall centerpiece. An example is this decorative wood bowl that was a stunner as a centerpiece once filled with fresh peaches and a few sprigs of greenery:

Other bowl filler ideas include red apples, a mix of red and green grapes, artichokes, or a mix of lemons and limes. Get other tablescape ideas in my post on simple Thanksgiving table decor ideas.
And now one last tip…
13. Warm It Up With Woven Accessories
I’m a sucker for woven or braided rattan, hyacinth, & jute accessories year-round but these textured neutrals are especially perfect for cozying up a room for fall. Some of my favorite simple fall accessories are {these budget-friendly woven pumpkins} that are $5 for the small size and $10 for the medium size:

I sprinkle them around our house on shelving, coffee tables, and anywhere else that can use a little dose of fall!
I hope you found an idea or two that inspired you to do a bit of fall decorating. It’s crazy to think that before too long we’ll all be decorating for the holidays – they are sneaking up on me big-time this year! Hope you all have a great week!
