Kids rooms are my very favorite rooms to decorate because they’re all about having fun and thinking outside of the box! When I madeover my girls’ rooms, we did them both HGTV style with big surprise reveals and seeing their reactions to their newly decorated spaces are some of my favorite memories! Today I’m sharing five of my favorite ideas for decorating kids rooms that come straight from my girls’ room makeovers. My friends Pam of Simple Details, Lisa of Shine Your Light, Jennifer of Dimples & Tangles, and our talented guest host, Julie of Julie Blanner are sharing their ideas for decorating kids’ rooms too! Julie has two girls just like me and their rooms are so cute and full of ideas you’ll want to steal, including this adorable bunk bed room that you can see more of {here}:
Thanks so much for joining us Julie! Now let’s get going with five ideas for decorating kids rooms that are my hands-down favorites (post includes some affiliate links – full disclosure statement {here}):
Monogram It!
From the littlest kids to teens, they all love things that are personalized with their name or initials so I often use monograms when decorating kids rooms! In my oldest daughter’s room, I bought {this slipcovered HENRIKSDAL chair} from IKEA and had someone local add her monogram to the back of it in a color that coordinates with the rest of her room – she loves it!:
If you don’t have an IKEA nearby or just want to make things a little simpler, you can also order {this very similar slipcovered chair} and have it monogrammed before it’s shipped out to you! If a monogrammed chair’s not your thing, there are plenty of other accessories that would also be perfect for a kid’s room including these favorites (scroll and click/tap):
And for you guys who are regulars around here, did you notice that I prettied this desk area up quite a bit since the last time you saw it? The {IKEA MICKE desk} has always been here but I recently added {this round gold mirror} (it’s a great price for a large round mirror!), {this crystal urn table lamp}, and some new desk accessories from HomeGoods (the BEST place to shop for things for your desk!) including a cute brass dachshund paperclip holder and these two gorgeous blue and white vases:
Make Paper Rosettes as Inexpensive Wall Art
I never spend a ton of money on art in kids rooms because their taste and likes/dislikes change quickly. In my youngest daughter’s room I was originally going to create a large art gallery wall over her chest of drawers but in the end decided to go with something a little simpler and lot less expensive – a wall of overlapping paper rosettes:
The rosettes are SO simple to make – you can find my DIY paper rosette tutorial {here}! We used wrapping paper that’s sold by the sheet at The Paper Source for our rosettes but any kind of paper that’s on the thicker side will work. So much fun, whether it’s as inexpensive wall art or as festive decorations at your next party!
Add a Cork Board in an Unexpected Spot
Cork boards are awesome to have in teen and tween rooms, both for them to pin things that interest them and for moms (and dads) to have a spot to leave little notes and reminders. You could go the simple route and hang up a standard cork board in your child’s room or get creative and add the cork board in an unexpected spot! At our old house, I added a burlap-covered cork board to the back of my daughter’s shelving hutch (you can go way back in the Driven by Decor vault to check out that project {here}) and in our new house, I did something a little different and added them to the closet doors:
This was actually a “kill two birds with one stone” project because it not only gave me the space to hang two large cork boards but it was also a fun way to dress up what used to be flat, plain closet doors.
You can find the step by step tutorial for my cork board closet doors {here} and see my full room reveal post that includes a complete source list for everything in my daughter’s room {here}.
Get Creative with Toy Storage
If your kiddo has a lot of toys, adding extra shelving is often all that you need but when the things they play with are small or have lots of itty, bitty parts it becomes a bit more tricky! When my daughters were younger, they were all about playing with little figurines – from Calico Critters to Littlest Pet Shop and Polly Pockets, those little things were ALL OVER our house! When we redecorated my daughter’s room several years back, I wanted to find a creative solution for storing all of her little things while still making them easily accessible. My solution was a purse wall!
I simply added several brass arrow wall hooks and a bunch of purses in all shapes and sizes in colors that coordinated with her bedding. We put all of her Littlest Pet Shop figurines in one purse, all of the Calico Critters in another, etc. Then when she wanted to play with something, she took down the purse or two with the little things she wanted to play with and when she was done, put them back in the purse and back up on the wall. OK, that last part about putting them back in the purse and back up on the wall didn’t happen as often as it should have 🙂 but this system still really helped a tons for both storage and organization!
Turn a Favorite Song into a Piece of Art
If your child has a song that they love (or a poem, quote, or saying), turn it into art! You can create your own song art by hand lettering a canvas or there are several artists on Etsy who will create it for you! I used {this Etsy shop} to create custom prints of my daughter’s favorite Taylor Swift song that I framed with barnwood frames from Hobby Lobby ({these} frames available online look very similar) and hung above her bed:
The options are truly endless with you being able to choose the song or saying along with the print size and font!
So there you have it… those are my five favorite ideas for decorating kids’ rooms! Hope you enjoyed this one! If you want to gather up some more inspiration, be sure to visit the rest of the crew who are sharing their best ideas for decorating kids’ rooms too:

So many beautiful ideas, but the blue room gets me every time! Thanks for having me!
Thanks Julie! And thanks so much for guest hosting with us!
You have some of the best ideas! Love them all and the fact that you did HGTV style makeovers. So fun! My daughter is too bossy and would never let me takeover like that
Thanks Julia! Well one of my daughters totally gave me free rein and it was a complete surprise reveal but the other one only left her room a few days before the reveal for the finishing touches – like your daughter she wasn’t about to let me fully take over!
Kris,
Great ideas! We’ve come full circle and my husband’s study doubles as our grand kids room when they come for a sleepover. We found a great looking daybed at Ikea and I’ve pulled out the books we used to read to our (now adult) children. Being g-ma is sure fun!
xo,
Karen
Karen, I have no doubt whatsoever that you are the best grandma around!
I am so in love with your daughter’s room! That grasscloth wallpaper and those ginger jars 🙂 It looks so sophisticated but could still pass as a kids room. So gorgeous!
Thanks so much Ashley! Fortunately she still likes it even though it’s been a couple of years now since I did it!
Kris the additions to the desk area are so sophisticated and pretty! Love them and your clever handbag storage idea for all those little things that the vacuum loves to suck up!
Thanks Lisa! Yes, those Polly Pockets about killed me when my girls were little!
You do such a great job on your girls’ rooms, Kris!
I love the brass chandelier! Can you please source it .
