Looking for some fun kids room decorating ideas? I’m sharing five of my favorites!
Kids rooms are my very favorite rooms to decorate because they’re all about having fun and thinking outside of the box! When I made-over my girls’ rooms, we did them both HGTV style with big surprise reveals and seeing their reactions to their newly decorated spaces are some of my favorite memories! Today I’m sharing five of my favorite ideas kids room decorating ideas that come straight from my girls’ room makeovers. (post includes some affiliate links – full disclosure statement {here}):
1. Monogram It!
From the littlest kids to teens, they all love things that are personalized with their name or initials so I often use monograms when decorating kids rooms! In my oldest daughter’s room, I bought a slipcovered chair from IKEA and had someone local add her monogram to the back of it in a color that coordinates with the rest of her room. She loves it!

2. Use Paper Rosettes as Inexpensive Wall Art
I never spend a ton of money on art in kids rooms because their taste and likes/dislikes change quickly. In my youngest daughter’s room I was originally going to create a large art gallery wall over her chest of drawers but in the end decided to go with something a little simpler and lot less expensive – a wall of overlapping paper rosettes:
The rosettes are SO simple to make – you can find my DIY paper rosette tutorial {here}! We used wrapping paper that’s sold by the sheet at The Paper Source for our rosettes but any kind of paper that’s on the thicker side will work. So much fun, whether it’s as inexpensive wall art or as festive decorations at your next party!
They’re inexpensive to buy too – I think {these inexpensive rosette options} are darling!
3.Add a Cork Board
Cork boards are awesome to have in teen and tween rooms, both for them to pin things that interest them and for moms (and dads) to have a spot to leave little notes and reminders. You could go the simple route and hang up a standard cork board in your child’s room or get creative and add the cork board in an unexpected spot! In my daughter’s room I did something a little different and added them to the closet doors:
This was actually a “kill two birds with one stone” project because it not only gave me the space to hang two large cork boards but it was also a fun way to dress up what used to be flat, plain closet doors.
You can find the step by step tutorial for my cork board closet doors {here} and see her full room reveal post that includes a complete source list for everything in this cute teen bedroom room {HERE}.
4. Hang a Swing
When we made-over my youngest daughter’s room, her #1 request was a swing chair. We hung one in the corner of her room and she has loved and used it for years! Definitely a favorite kids room decorating idea:
Room Sources: Gold quatrefoil pendant | Upholstered headboard (DIY) | Moroccan leather poufs | Woven lidded laundry basket | Small acrylic lamp | Chest of drawers | Hanging swing chair (similar) | Brass globe lamp | White linen quilt
She does homework and reads books in it and her friends always love coming over and taking a little swing in it too! We hung it with a simple metal eye hook that screwed into a ceiling joist and covered the chain hanging down to the swing with rope.
The exact swing she had is no longer available but {this rattan swing chair} and {this similar chair} are great options! If you want to see more of my daughter’s bedroom, you can check out her boho chic bedroom reveal {here}.
5. Turn a Favorite Song into a Piece of Art
If your child has a song that they love (or a poem, quote, or saying), turn it into art! You can create your own song art by hand lettering a canvas or there are several artists on Etsy who will create it art with personalized lyrics or quotes {here}. I ordered custom prints of my daughter’s favorite Taylor Swift song from an Etsy shop and framed them with barnwood frames similar to {these frames}. They look so cute hung above her bed and she loves them:
The options are truly endless with you being able to choose the song or saying along with the print size and font!
So there you have it… those are my five favorite kids room decorating ideas. Do you have any to add?

You have some of the best ideas! Love them all and the fact that you did HGTV style makeovers. So fun! My daughter is too bossy and would never let me takeover like that
Kris Jarrett says
Thanks Julia! Well one of my daughters totally gave me free rein and it was a complete surprise reveal but the other one only left her room a few days before the reveal for the finishing touches – like your daughter she wasn’t about to let me fully take over!

Kris,
Great ideas! We’ve come full circle and my husband’s study doubles as our grand kids room when they come for a sleepover. We found a great looking daybed at Ikea and I’ve pulled out the books we used to read to our (now adult) children. Being g-ma is sure fun!
xo,
Karen
Kris Jarrett says
Karen, I have no doubt whatsoever that you are the best grandma around!
