When the week started off, I was feeling pretty good about my One Room Challenge bonus room makeover and thinking that maybe for once I was actually going to knock this baby out in six weeks without the crunch time panic that has ensued EVERY time I’ve participated in the ORC in the past. And then on Monday, it all went south. There was an unexpected delay with the wallpaper I was planning to use in the bonus room so it’s now not going to arrive in time, my wallpaperer injured his back and had surgery so is out of the game, the ottomans I was planning to use went out of stock (my bad for not ordering them earlier!), and I realized that the long weekend when my kids are off school (during which we have lots of plans) is actually the weekend before my ORC reveal when I had been thinking it was the week after. Yikes! But what am I to do except keep trudging forward and hoping that by some miracle it will all come together in the end, right?! Here’s where things are at (post includes some affiliate links – full disclosure statement {here}):
And here’s the breakdown of what I’ve gotten done… First, I found some great (and cheap!) lighting for both the bonus and craft rooms. For the far side of the daybed I found {this brass swing arm floor lamp} – I pulled it out in front of the daybed to give you a better look:
It’s a really nice lamp for the price! Right now it looks a little awkward in that spot but I think that once the gallery wall goes up and the wallpaper is in place it will all come together (but I’ve kept the box just in case ๐ ). I also picked up this gal’s little sister (available {here}) for the craft room:
But having two versions of almost the same lamp in two adjoining spaces is a little too matchy for me so I kept on looking and found this little beauty (available {here}) that I LOVE:
I know it’s hard to tell from the pic but it’s a small, huggable little guy which is perfect since the craft room is a tiny space. Now I need to order a second one because lamps are the only source of light in that windowless room so a pair is a must!
In other progress, I finalized (I think) the layout of the gallery wall for above the daybed. Putting a gallery wall together is such a game of Jenga – I like to leave everything laid out on the floor for several days and keep coming back and tweaking it until it feels balanced. This is probably version #543 but for some strange reason I enjoy the challenge!
You also may have also noticed that I found a side table! Finding one that was a good fit wasn’t easy because the daybed is so deep, but {this tiered side table} fits the space really well and even more importantly, my daughters really love it.ย
The top of the legs are brass and the bottom of the legs are wood – I might end up needing to paint or whitewash the wood portion so that it fits better with everything but I’m going to wait until the room is farther along to make that call. I’m envisioning a bunch of plants on the marble rounds – wouldn’t that be fun?ย
Oh and most importantly this week… I came up with a revised wallpaper plan! You might remember that originally I had planned to use {this wallpaper} in the bonus room and when I first found out that the wallpaper wasn’t going to be back in stock in time for my room reveal, I decided I would just paint the walls for now and wait on the wallpaper because I didn’t want to sacrifice my final design because of an ORC deadline. But then I started looking at more wallpapers because sometimes thing happen for a reason – some of my favorite design decisions have been made when I was forced to go to a plan B. And I came up with a plan that I’m totally happy with and definitely rivals my original plan. I’m going with {this gorgeous wallpaper with leafy vines} (the left square) for the craft room and {this geometric design}ย (the right square) that was originally slated for the craft room will now go in the bonus room (both are c/o Serena & Lily). The two wallpapers coordinate beautifully with {my daybed quilt}ย c/o Vera Bradley that’s the main pattern in the space:
And if you’re thinking the three patterns look kinda busy together, you’re right! But none of them will be right next to the other – there’s still going to be a lot of white in the room because of the beadboard that’s halfway up the wall so I actually think it will be just enough pattern to be playful without being overwhelming. And I’m going to try to keep the patterns of my daybed pillows to a minimum. In addition to {these two small tassel stripe pillows}ย c/o Vera Bradley, I’ll be adding some white quilted euro shams and a few subtle tone-on-tone 20-22″ pillows to the mix. ย ย
And one last thing! Some new plans for the craft room that I’ll either be SO glad I went through with or will go down in Driven by Decor history as one of my biggest “why did I do this?” moments ever. The cabinetry in the craft room is seriously the most gross, yellowy-beigy color – I’ve always hated it but have never wanted to spend the money to replace it.
So after the success of painting the floor tile in our bathroom, I decided that I’m going to try painting it. And I might throw some Con-Tact paper into the makeover mix too – more to come on that…
What started off as a bad, panicked ORC week ended up as a “I think I can pull this off” week, especially after Linda decided to push the reveal date of the One Room Challenge out one week! Did you guys already hear about that? Woo hoo! Since my wallpaperer is down for the count I think I’m going to tackle hanging it on my own and will need every last minute I can get! So now that you’ve gotten my update (thanks for hanging in there – this one was a doozy!), you can head on over to check out the room progress from the other ORC linking participants {here}.ย
I’ll see you all back on blog next week with what I think is going to be one of my favorite My Five Favorite topics ever! Enjoy your weekend!
Love the brass detail and how it’s picked up on the side table too. The blue and white bedding looks so charming and probably very comfy too! I can’t wait to see your wallpaper going up!
Thank you so much!
It’s going to be great! What is it about a day bed… they’re so pretty!
I’ve always wanted a daybed – finally living the dream! ๐
Oh it’s looking great so far Kris! Can’t wait to see more!
Thank you so much Alma!
I’m loving this room Kris! Such fresh and pretty colors, and the wallpaper is fantastic! After all of the wallpaper removal I’ve done, I can’t believe I’m even contemplating adding wallpaper to my house again! I love it combined with the addition of molding – it will be gorgeous!
And if you’re looking to paint those cabinets – try Stix to prime them – sticks to anything. ๐
Jenny I kinda feel the same way – I think I’ve mentally blocked out how horrible the wallpaper was to remove – ha! And yes, I’m using Stix – it’s my go-to primer!
PS – How did I miss that the ORC deadline was pushed out a week? It probably would have been better for me had I NOT known that. Finishing ahead of schedule? Unheard of!! ๐
Kris, everything looks amazing! Looks like you and I both had navy and white on the mind for our ORC. A classic that will be long lasting. Contact paper – oh, yeah! Started my install today…
Thanks Tracey! I think you basically can’t go wrong with navy and white right?! ๐
I love the wallpaper you are going with! It looks great with the bedding. Can’t wait to see it all come together.
Thank you so much Lauren!
Kris I’m dying over all of that glorious blue pattern!! Those papers are stunning! I can’t wait to see how you complete this space, it will be amazing!!
Thanks Tam! It’s definitely more pattern than my usual but I’m definitely having fun with it in this space!
This has been one of my favorites of all your makeovers. Could it be because I’m doing our whole house in blue, white and yellow? Hmmm. Love all of it. DiAnn from Florida
DiAnn you are so sweet to say that! It’s such a small space compared to others that I’ve done before that I was just hoping it would still be fun to follow along with ๐
Kris – your creativity never fails to dazzle & amaze me!! Call me at Ringโs End in Norwalk if you need some wallpaper installers. Iโve got some great ones!! Focus your time on other ORC challenges!! Cheers!
Denise
Thank you Denise – I did end up getting someone to wallpaper the bonus room and I’m glad I did – it took him quite a while! I miss seeing you at our local Rings End ๐
Kris, yes yes yes to that new wallpaper decision! I seriously love it!!! This space is coming together beautifully. Can’t wait to see what you do with your craft room cabinets! xo
Thank you Jen!!!
Kris, I feel your pain in regards to your deadline approaching and having your trusted
wall paperer down for the count with back issues. I recently had this problem too, and went to
houzz.com looked for a contractor that specialized in what I needed, put in my zip code, and
amazingly names appeared. I chose someone in my county with a portfolio of photos of her work. I am still in shock how it worked out so quickly. God Is So Good!!
That’s an awesome solution! Thanks for sharing!
Kris I absolutely love where this is all going! But I totally somehow missed that you’re doing the craft room too! You are a wild woman and my hero! And that craft room was the very first thing I read about on your blog way back when you first moved to CT! Can’t wait to see the wallpaper up and all that you have planned coming together – it’ll all get done!
More like an idiot than a hero – lol! And you have a super good memory – yes, it was the very first thing I worked on!!
Kris,
It’s really coming together. I’m not clicking the links until after the reveal. I know I’ll love it and it’s fun to it finalized. ๐
Enjoy your weekend.
xo,
Karen
Reveal day is my favorite day to check out everyone’s projects too!!
Actually, I am liking the new wallpaper even more than the original pick. Always works out! Loving the make over.
I love the blue! Your room will be just gorgeous when you complete it. I think the blue and the brass pieces looks really good together. I love how you are arranging the frames too.
Thank you so much Terrie!
Love your choices! Let us know how those lamps work out – I actually love Target lighting. I think they have some great options. Canโt wait to see it when itโs done!
Thanks Karen! I’ll be sharing the lamps in my reveal on Thursday but the brass and acrylic table lamps and the swing arm floor lamp both worked out great – love them!
The mix of stripes and florals is spot on! It will be such a cheerful place to hang out when it’s done. You had a lot of mishaps but I admire you for forging ahead!
Thank you Jean! I’m glad you’re liking how it’s coming together!
Kris – I totally enjoy your blog. A suggestion for the craft room – adding a solar tube. They are basically the size of a recessed can, fit between rafters/joists and add a surprising amount of natural light. They also come with LED options for inside the tube. No affiliation, I used them on a recent remodel in a really tight hallway – made a huge difference.
Thanks so much for the suggestion! That’s a really great idea – I’m going to look into it!!
