1. Create a Bedroom Drop Zone
One of the keys to keeping your bedroom organized is taming the small daily clutter. It might not seem like much to empty what’s in your pockets onto the dresser or take your earrings off and place them on your nightstand, but over time, these daily habits create major clutter.
The solution is to have a designated drop zone as you enter your bedroom that serves as a temporary holding spot for items that need to be put away later or will be used again the next day. In our bedroom, smaller items are the culprit, so we have {this valet tray} on our dresser as our drop spot:
If larger items are the clutter culprit in your house, a decorative basket or box may work best as your drop zone, such as {this one} that we use for entryway shoe storage:
Whatever you use for your drop zone, take a few minutes about once a week to find a home for every item placed in it.
2. Say No to Floordrobes
Another culprit of bedroom chaos is the infamous “floordrobe”. You know the one – the pile of clothes that accumulates on the floor because they’ve been worn but are still clean enough that you plan to wear them again.
Make today the day that you kick your floordrobe habit! The solution may be as simple as hanging a few hooks on the wall for clothes that would otherwise hit the floor. Or you could add an over-the-door rack with hooks like {this one} we had in our previous home:
Another bedroom organization idea to help with this is to have a bench or pair of stools like {these teak camp stools} at the end of your bed that can hold your pajamas for the next night or clothes you plan to rewear the next day:
3. Swap Your Nightstand for a Dresser
Sometimes the effort to keep your bedroom organized is thwarted by the fact that you simply don’t have enough storage space. If your bedroom is large enough to accommodate it, consider using small dressers or chests next to your bed instead of traditional nightstands. Not only will the extra drawers provide additional storage space, but using dressers as nightstands also gives your bedroom a high-end look:
Whether you’re using a nightstand or dresser next to your bed, choose one that’s sized correctly for your bed. Ideally, they should be the same height as the top of your mattress or 1-3″ higher.
If you have a platform bed, you likely won’t be able to find a dresser or chest that’s low enough to work well as a nightstand. In this case, simply choose a nightstand with as much storage space as possible. I recently swapped out the single-drawer nightstands in this bedroom to {these wider nightstands} with two large drawers. The extra storage space is awesome:
Sources: Ceiling fan | Beadboard bed (weathered white) | Round mirror (small) | Embroidered stripe pillow shams | Embroidered stripe duvet cover | Blue and white pillows – no longer available | White tassel pillow | Cane bench | Nightstand | White Lamp (similar) | Cane box | Ruffle bowl (similar)
I love having a place to store everything from books and magazines to charging cables, extra tissue boxes, and everything else I don’t want cluttering up the top of our nightstands.
4. Divide and Conquer Your Drawers
Whipping a few drawers into organized shape with dividers is another bedroom organization idea to put into action. Our nightstand drawers are the ones that tend to collect the most clutter, so I added one of {these shallow organizer trays} to each one:
Drawer organizers not only force you to organize what’s in the drawer, but they basically force you to stay organized since each item has a designated spot.
If your drawer organizer doesn’t fill your entire drawer, keep it from sliding to the back of your drawer by adding some of {this museum putty} to the bottom of it. Or you can lock your drawer organizer in place by sticking a pair of {these cord clips} on the butting up to the back of your organizer tray:
For deeper drawers, I’ve used tall fabric organizers to compartmentalize and organize everything:
My exact organizers are no longer available, but {these organizers} are similar and very highly rated. Once you get a drawer or two organized, you’ll be motivated to keep the momentum going and tackle more!
5. Tame Cord Clutter with a Wireless Bedside Charger
This is one of my favorite bedroom organization ideas! If you keep your phone on your bedside for charging at night, instead of cluttering your nightstand with cords and chargers, consider using a wireless charger like {this cute floral charger} I keep on my nightstand (I have the matching AirPod case too!):
Not only do I love that it keeps my bedside free of draped cords, but I no longer get in bed and realize that I can’t charge my phone because someone snagged my cord 🙂.
6. Use Honeycomb Organizers in Your Underwear & Sock Drawers
There are several solutions you can use to organize your underwear and sock drawers, including {these honeycomb organizers} with honeycomb-shaped openings that are perfect for smaller items like socks and underwear. You can snap together as many as you need to fill the width of your drawer, and they can also be cut to fit your drawer’s depth.
Each honeycomb opening fits one larger pair of socks or two pairs of smaller ankle socks. This is the size of the 8-piece set once snapped together:
If you don’t want to fill an entire drawer with them, add a drawer divider to lock them in place, like {this bamboo divider} that I have in mine.
7. Stack Up Your Jewelry
Need more space for storing earrings, necklaces, and bracelets than your jewelry box can hold? {This stackable jewelry organizer} is perfect for storing a lot of jewelry without taking up much precious drawer space:
I have two of the 2-piece clear sets that each include a top and a total of four trays with divided compartments:

8. Or… Hang It in Your Closet
If you need a different jewelry storage option because you have limited drawer space, consider a hanging jewelry organizer that you keep in your closet like {this one}:
It’s double-sided with clear zippered pouches, so you can quickly find what you’re looking for.
I’m not going to address closet organization systems in this post, but if you’re thinking about doing a complete organizing overhaul of your closet, check out these posts on the two different closet systems we’ve used:
9. Maximize Your Storage Space with Vacuum Bags
A simple way to maximize your bedroom storage space is to use vacuum storage bags like {these}. If you aren’t familiar with them, they’re basically ginormous ziplock bags that you seal and then suck the air out of with your vacuum. They not only save space but also protect your items from dust. It takes less than two minutes to stuff and vacuum seal a bag, and it compacts the contents to about ⅓ to ¼ their original size.
You can use vacuum storage bags to store off-season clothes, extra blankets and pillows, sleeping bags, extra towels, or any other textiles that you want to keep but aren’t frequently used. Even if your storage space under your bed is only a few inches high, it’s enough to store large vacuum storage bags under it:
10. Rolling Underbed Storage
If the storage underneath your bed is at least 6″ high, consider using rolling underbed storage. We have a pair {these rolling underbed storage containers} in one of our bedrooms, and they’re perfect for storing our games and puzzles:
They roll smoothly on carpet and make it super easy to access what’s stored inside.
11. Divide Up Your Shelves
One of my favorite organizing tips for any type of shelving is to use dividers to define the space where items should be placed. They can be used in linen closets, bedroom closets, or any furniture pieces with shelving. We have {this tall woven cabinet} in our bedroom with interior shelves for storage of sweaters and {these slide-on acrylic dividers} work great for keeping my sweaters neatly stacked:
For bottom shelves where you can’t use a slide-on divider, {these highly rated dividers} with double-sided tape on the bottom are a great solution.
12. Use the Back of Your Bedroom Door
You might be surprised by how much extra storage space you can add to the back of a door! There are a variety of different organizer options out there, but my favorite is The Container Store’s Elfa system door racks. They consist of a metal rail that spans the entire height of the door that you attach a variety of components to for a customized solution.
From shoes and handbags to accessories and scarves, an over-the-door storage system allows you to easily access and store your belongings. For example, {this particular door rack} includes a smart combination of shoe racks and baskets:
It’s a bedroom organization idea that’s simple but can have a big impact.
13. Purge and Organize What’s in Your Closet
If you’re working on organizing your bedroom, include your closet in on the fun. Begin by sorting through your clothes and donating any that you no longer wear. Then take stock of what you’re keeping and use the organizing solutions that best fit your needs.
Two of my favorite closet organizing solutions include {this cap organizer}:
and {this under-shelf hanging clutch organizer}:

14. Use a Stylish, Accessible Laundry Hamper
The closer you keep your laundry hamper to where you take your clothes off, the greater the likelihood that you’ll use it. Having a laundry hamper in every bedroom (especially kids rooms!) is key for keeping clothing clutter at bay. Instead of hiding your hamper in a closet, choose a stylish option that you can leave out in the open where it’s easy to access.
My favorite hamper is {this lidded La Jolla basket}, which adds texture, warmth, and style to any space:
It’s not cheap (although the natural color is on big sale right now!), but I’ve had mine for years and it has maintained its shape beautifully unlike cheaper options I had before it that gradually collapsed and needed to be replaced. The medium size (shown above) is a great hamper size for most bedrooms. The large size is great for bedrooms shared by two people if you have the space (but be warned, it’s pretty huge!). Check out my post on laundry hampers with lids for more of my favorites.
15. Corral Stuffed Animals
Let’s wrap up my bedroom organization ideas with one geared toward kids rooms and the ever-multiplying stuffed animal collections. There are several simple solutions to help keep them from taking over the bedroom, including adding a stuffed animal net like {this one}:
or keeping them tucked away in a bean bag chair cover like {this one}:
