Looking for the prettiest Christmas ribbon out there? I’m sharing all of my favorite sources for Christmas ribbon for your tree, presents, wreaths, and more!
I decorate with a pretty obscene amount of ribbon for the holidays – I use Christmas ribbon on my front door greenery swag, my Christmas trees, my stockings, my presents, the wreaths on the backs of our dining chairs, and pretty much anywhere and everywhere else I can think of to use it! I always get asked where I buy my Christmas ribbon so today I’m sharing not only where I buy it but also what type of ribbon I like to use for various holiday decorating projects. Let’s kick things off with where I buy my Christmas ribbon for wreaths… (post includes affiliate links; full disclosure statement available {here})
Christmas Ribbon for Wreaths
Favorite type of ribbon: 2.5″ patterned wired edge ribbon
Favorite places to buy: Amazon & Etsy
I pretty much always go with patterned ribbon for my Christmas wreaths and my swag on our front door – 2.5″ wired ribbon works best for me! If you like to go with a classic Christmas ribbon, red, white, & black plaid like the one I used for my front door swag (you can find my tutorial for how I make it {here}) is always a winner:
Some current favorite plaids include {this checked ribbon option}, {this red diagonal plaid}, and {this tartan plaid ribbon}.
I also love a good stripe! I’ve used this watercolor 2.5″ ribbon in red (found {here}) to hang our magnolia wreath on the window in our kitchen:
I’ve also scored a lot of great patterned 2.5″ wired ribbon on Etsy over the years too. The Etsy shops that I’ve had the most luck with is 5th Street Studio {HERE} and Blue Cotton Designs {HERE}.
Christmas Ribbon for Your Tree
Favorite type of ribbon: 4″ & 2.5″ wired edge ribbon
Favorite places to buy: Amazon & Etsy
I usually decorate my trees with a single style of 4″ wired edge ribbon throughout the entire tree plus several types of 2.5″ wired edge ribbons. The 4″ ribbon is a little tricky to work with so if you’re new to adding ribbon to your tree, I’d recommend skipping the 4″ ribbon and just using a few styles of 2.5″ wide ribbon for your first try – it will still be beautiful! No matter what width ribbon you use, it’s key to make sure your ribbons are wired edge so you can bend them and create pretty, full loops. Also, use a mix of solid and sheer ribbon. If you haven’t seen it, I share how to decorate a Christmas tree {here}, walking you through the step by step details including tips on adding your ribbon.
Most of my 4″ wired ribbon from past years was found at Balsam Hill including the gorgeous wide gray velvet ribbon that I’ve used on my family room tree for the past several years:
but unfortunately they don’t have a large selection of ribbon anymore. The best current source I’ve found for 4″ and 2.5″ wired velvet ribbon is {this Etsy shop}. In fact I believe {this ribbon} may be the exact gray velvet ribbon that I have. Wired velvet ribbon is definitely not cheap but if you save the spools and roll it back up nicely when you put your Christmas tree away for the season, you can use it again and again for years.
As with my wreaths, I get most of my 2.5″ wired ribbon for my trees from Amazon. I like to use a combination of opaque and sheer ribbons. This is the combination I went with for our blue and white tree last year:
Ribbon sources: 2.5″ sheer ivory ribbon | 2.5″ gold mini dots sheer ribbon |2.5″ blue & gray plaid ribbon | 2.5″ denim polka dot ribbon
Christmas Ribbon for Presents
Favorite type of ribbon: Wired edge and velvet ribbon – all sizes
Favorite places to buy: The Container Store, M&J Trimming, Target
I love, love, love wrapping presents and use a ton of ribbon when I wrap! Just like with Christmas tree ribbon, wire-edged ribbon works best for making bows because you can shape it to make your bows full and the tails wavy. The Container Store is my happy place for gift wrapping ribbon – they have a Holiday Shop {here} with all sorts of ribbon options. These are a few holiday packages that I wrapped using Container Store paper and ribbon:
Along with wired edge ribbon, velvet ribbon looks beautiful on presents – just tie a simple velvet bow or do some creative layering:
My favorite source for velvet ribbon (non-wired) is {M&J Trimming here}. For this present, I used three ⅝″ ribbons in grey, moss, and pale pink (all found {here}).
Target also has some great ribbon options around the holidays (especially online!) – you can check them out {here}.

Christmas Ribbon for Your Stockings
Favorite type of ribbon: Wide velvet ribbon
Favorite place to buy: M&J Trimming
You can use the same ribbons on your stockings as you do to wrap presents but my favorite type of ribbon for these spots is wide velvet ribbon – it adds such a luxurious look and feel! The widths that I like best for this are 1 ⅜″ wide velvet ribbon (see options {HERE}) or 2″ wide velvet ribbon (see options {HERE}). There are TONS of gorgeous colors to choose from – this velvet ribbon that I have dressing up our stockings last year is the 2″ dark gray:
I also like wide velvet ribbon for covering up hangers! I use Command hooks for most of my Christmas decor that hangs on the walls and sticking a bow on top of the hook is my favorite way to disguise it – I used this 2″ velvet ribbon in navy (found {here}) over the hook for our countdown-to-Christmas advent calendar:
I hope you guys found this post helpful – definitely let me know if you have any other burning ribbon questions 🙂 . Hope you all have a great week!
XOXO,

Hello! I noticed you used a command strip on wallpaper – has that ever backfired on you? I just put up some Target peel and stick wallpaper and was wondering if I would ruin it with command strips.
Lovely post as always!

Hi Jenni! I’ve only tried it once before on wallpaper but it worked great – I was just very, very careful about removing it slowly and I made sure I didn’t put it on a wallpaper seam.

Love following you!! Question, where did you find your swag on the front door? Do you know the name of the greens?
Kris Jarrett says
It’s actually just greenery and berry branches clipped from my yard. Here’s a post from several years back with the details: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/decorating-our-front-door-for-christmas/

I’ve enjoyed wrapping gifts that amaze the recipients for over 20 years. Many people have commented that the gift is too pretty to unwrap. I’m sure this has happened to you as well and they leave it under their tree as decor.
So I like to wrap with a subtle hint of what is inside. If I’m giving a ceramic mug with a moose wearing a red and black buffalo check scarf then I utilize that concept in my design. I would use brown wrapping paper, the same black and red buffalo check in a wired ribbon and finish up with a small wooden moose ornament with spruce sprigs and pinecones. With a more elegant gift I use gold wrap with 2 different glitter ribbons and use something lush with perhaps a small touch of the color that is in the gift with a pick and pearl strands. I so enjoy your blog.

Sally that is seriously the cutest idea ever! Thank you for taking the time to share it with us!

Silly question…do you know the length of the striped ribbon on the wreath in the window?
I bought both:)

Hi Christina, I know this comes a bit late but you can see that full tree here: https://www.drivenbydecor.com/2018-christmas-home-tour/

Would you recommend Michael’s (especially Black Friday Sales) for ribbon?
