It’s hard to find lighting fixtures with a classic, timeless design that you can have in your home for years and years yet never tire of. I’ve long admired the Hicks Pendant designed by Thomas O’Brien and each time I see it on Pinterest or in a design magazine, instead of getting tired of it, I fall more in love with it. The Hicks Pendant is both retro and modern and has a classic, visually interesting design that makes any space a touch more glamorous.

The Hicks Pendant comes in three sizes and four finishes, my favorite of which is the bronze with hand-rubbed antique brass accents. Two or three of these pendants in a white kitchen is sheer perfection:

The Hicks Pendant is an expensive light fixture so if I’m ever lucky enough to have one, it will probably be just that – ONE. Fortunately, there are many places in my home where I can envision using a single Hicks Pendant, including over the kitchen sink or above a dining or game table:

I think it would be the perfect lighting fixture for our new home office but since our house will be in the hands of renters for the next two years, we capped our recently installed ceiling light box this weekend – that fabulous fixture will just have to wait. How about you – would you love to have a Hicks Pendant in your home?
I can see why you love these light fixtures so much! They look great in both modern and traditional settings. Really love the second image. I want one now too!
I’m seriously considering putting a lone large hicks pendant over my small kitchen island. I feel the same way you do … they are everywhere but I still love them! My kitchen island is 34×38 inches and the ceiling is about 8.5 feet so there won’t be a ton of chain showing but there will be some (the chain is maybe my favorite part). Any thoughts on the scale of that?
Hi Erin,
For those dimensions, I would consider going with the extra-large (16″) pendant for the best scale. If you haven’t already seen it, this post may be helpful to you – it gives you a good idea of the appropriate width and height for light fixtures:

I’d love to see a pic of how it looks if you end up going for it!
Thanks, Kris. I hadn’t even really thought about the extra large, but now that you mention it, that might be more appropriate in scale. If I had a higher ceiling there’s no question it would be the right call. I’m going to hang some balloons from the ceiling this weekend to try to get a feel for the scale.
I am currently redoing my kitchen and am putting in a banquette and a hicks pendand JUST LIKE the 8th picture in this above series. I am just really struggling on whether or not I should get large or extra large– especially because I don’t know what kind of table I’m getting yet. What do you think the picture is? Large? Extra large?
It’s hard to tell from the picture because there is only a 3 1/2″ difference in width between the large and extra large pendants. To best choose between the two sizes, I would figure out your table size first if you can and then also take into consideration the height of your ceiling. I really like the look of an oversized fixture over kitchen tables so I would probably go for the extra large if you are doing a big enough table but only if the oversized look is to your taste! Good luck with your kitchen remodel – fun but also stressful, right?!
I still love the Hicks pendant!!! Are they over yet because I want to use them in my kitchen? I am currently remodeling my kitchen. My island is 4 feet by 11 feet. Would I need 2 or 3 pendants and what size? My ceilings are 8 foot and I don’t want t;he pendants to be too big or too much over my island… My kitchen is all white with quartz countertops. Please let me know what you think as far as number and size of pendants! Thank you !
Hi! I think the Hicks pendant is a classic and I would still love to use them too if we ever do a kitchen reno! For an island that size, I would think that you could get away with using three large ones but it’s really something that I’d have to see in person to say for sure. I recommend that you either take balls or blow up balloons to the size of the medium and large pendants and hold them over your island to get an idea of what you think looks best.
I know this article is now several years old but I still love the hicks pendant. I’m in the process of remodeling a beach home. The kitchen will be white shaker, oil rubbed bronze hardware, stainless steel appliances. Do you think I can pull off the Bronze with aged brass or is that too many metals together? Also, the living room, dining room and kitchen are all one room. Do you have any thoughts on the dining room chandelier if I go with the hicks pendant? I’m sort of getting hung up on that. Visually it can be a lot going on.
Hi Renee,
I am remodeling my kitchen and family room. I’ve been wanting to use the Hicks pendants over my 40×96 island. However, I have a round 60inch kitchen table near the island and I am not coming up with a chandelier that I feel compliments the Hicks pendant. It sounded like you were having the same issue. Did you find anything that works? Lisa
Hello! I love these pendants even after all this time! Our kitchen island is 5 foot by 5 foot and our ceilings are 10 feet high. I’m thinking two pendants but what size would you recommend? I have two gold lanterns there now but I think the Hicks pendant would give a more modern look.
Thanks for your advice!
