Ten Great Football Recipes for Super Bowl Parties

Ten-Great-Super-Bowl-Football-Recipes-Ideas

We all know that the Super Bowl is as much about food and beer as it is about football so it’s time to start thinking about what to make for this year’s Super Bowl parties!  I’m planning to make Football Potato Skins from a recipe that was in last year’s Kroger “Game Day” flyer: Here’s the recipe: Wash 6-8 russet potatoes and rub with olive oil. Bake potatoes for 1 hour at 400 F. While they are baking, cook 4 slices of bacon in skillet until crisp; cool, crumble, and set aside. Remove potatoes from oven and allow to cool slightly. Cut potatoes in half lengthwise and remove excess potato, leaving slightly less than 1/4 inch of potato in the skin. Re-oil and salt potatoes. Cook for an additional 10 minutes until slightly crisp. Remove from oven and stuff with cheese (a total of 3/4 cup) and bacon. Broil at […]

Scoping Out Calico Corners’ New Nate Berkus Collection

Nate-Berkus-Calico-Corner-Fabric-Room

The new Nate Berkus fabric line that I wrote about last week has arrived at Calico Corners! {Calico Corners} {Calico Corners} The entire fabric collection can be viewed on Calico Corners’ website but fabric is something that I just can’t shop for online. I’ve got to see fabrics in person and get my fabric-lovin’ hands on them to feel their weight and texture and see their true colors. I made it into Calico Corners this week to do just that with the new Nate Berkus collection and snapped a few pics to show you some of my favorites. If I counted right, there are 23 different fabric patterns, many of which come in three or four colorways. As is the case with most of Calico Corners’ newer collections, only a few of the Nate Berkus fabrics are hanging on rolls.  You can get fabric swatches cut from the rolls but any […]

This giveaway is now closed – thanks for entering! Happy Wednesday friends! If you’re having a hard time getting over that Wednesday hump, I’ve got just the thing for you – a fabulous giveaway from Etsy shop Textured INK! Best of all, Textured INK’s prints are totally customizable with any colors and text that you choose so once you’ve found your favorite print you can personalize it to make it uniquely yours!  Some of my favorite Textured INK prints are those that are designed to hang in your kitchen, such as this grouping of colorful chevron prints and this darling print that is personalized with your family’s name: I’m a total sucker for typography and monograms so Textured INK’s monogram prints […]

A Glass Top Desk for Our Home Office

White-wash-three-piece-bookcase-wm

Last week we made some major progress on the remodel of our home office. First of all, I finally chose a paint color! After narrowing it down to ten possible colors (the eight dark gray paint colors that I had been considering for a few weeks plus two more colors I found more recently through readers’ comments: Behr’s Fashion Gray and Restoration Hardware’s Charcoal), the winner was Martha Stewart’s Zinc. I wasn’t sure how I was going to decide because all ten are gorgeous colors but when I placed the paint chips next to the paint color in my foyer and my drapery fabric for the room, Zinc jumped out as the clear winner, coordinating beautifully with both. We also had the hardwood floors in our office refinished last week and we pulled down our old wimpy chair rail and crown molding that we hope to have replaced within the next week (well, […]

DIY Organizer for Hair Accessories

White-bathroom-cabinet-drawer-wm

Last week I pulled open a drawer in my daughters’ bathroom searching for shampoo – I didn’t find any but I did find a jumbled mess of Band-Aids, tissues, toothpaste, lotions, contact lenses, antiseptics, cosmetic bags, and lots and lots and lots of hair bands and scrunchies: It’s pretty obvious that my daughters didn’t inherit my love of organization! I know that I should have just closed the drawer and put this disorganized mess out of my mind but I couldn’t let it go. Must. Organize. Drawer. First things first – the hair bands and scrunchies that are taking up a good chunk of drawer space. A quick trip to the Container Store, a few scraps of fabric, and… problem solved!  This is about the easiest DIY organization project ever – I started with a few of these small gift mailers from the Container store that come in white, gold, silver, and all other […]

Nate Berkus’ New Fabric Collection at Calico Corners

Nate-Berkus-for-Calico-Corner

Over the weekend my youngest daughter and I went to Calico Corners to look at fabrics because a makeover of her bedroom (we’re saying goodbye to little girl butterflies and hello to modern tween!) is the next project I’m jumping into after our home office remodel is complete. As we were heading out of the store, a pair of familiar, sultry eyes jumped out at me from a stack of flyers: I had no idea, did you? Apparently Nate Berkus has created his first ever fabric collection and it will be sold exclusively at Calico Corners starting on Monday. I’m sure you all love Nate Berkus as much as I do – he designs with the perfect mix of classic and contemporary, neutrals and color, & elegance and comfort.   {Nate Berkus} I think that his fall collection for Target is fantastic and includes so many great accessories. I’m hoping that […]

Using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on Floors

Shades-of-Amber-Annie-Sloan-Chalk-Paint-Floor-Black

I was surfing around the Internet and Pinterest this weekend looking for more options for dark gray paint colors (I can’t seem to make a decision about which color to paint my home office among the dark gray colors I’ve already found so it makes no total sense to be looking for even more paint options, right?) and I came across this beautiful gray floor on Shades of Amber: Amber had gotten sick of the old carpet in her store so she ripped it out and painted the underlying concrete floor with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint! Ever since I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to paint my kitchen table, I’ve been in love with this “no priming, no sanding needed” paint so I thought it was fabulous to see a new use for it. Amber used the Graphite color, stenciled a pattern in Old White, and then covered it with Annie Sloan’s Lacquer, a […]

Wall Prep Before Painting: A Few Tips & Tricks

Final-3-Great-Tips-for-Better-and-Easier-Wall-Prep

I’m continuing to slowly make some headway in our home office makeover – the ceiling has been patched, primed, and painted and I’ve finished the wall prep so that the walls are now paint-ready! I don’t know about you but while I really don’t mind painting, I HATE the wall prep. Spackling and sanding ranks right up there with cleaning out the refrigerator, pooper scooping the backyard, and waiting in the neverending line at our grocery store deli. Except I’d still rather do all of those things than spackle and sand. After having prepped and painted many, many rooms, at least I’ve figured out three tips/tricks that make the wall prep process a little less painful: 1. Patch any scratches, gouges, or other imperfections in the wall with joint compound that you mix yourself rather than the premixed type that you buy in plastic containers. I use Sheetrock’s Easy Sand […]
